This 4-year study responds to the rise in childhood obesity by implementing and evaluating a community-based program targeting children aged 9-12. County Cooperative Extension Offices will be key in mobilizing local partners to deliver consistent messages to children. The study will emphasize two main messages: reducing intake of soda and other sugar-sweetened beverages and limiting fast food intake, the behaviors that have the most chance of affecting obesity status. Messages will be delivered in schools, after-school programs, homes and communities, thereby surrounding the child with consistent messages. Change is more likely to occur when the home, the school and the larger community are involved.
