About the Victory Garden Program

Historically, Victory Gardens were implemented as an effort to increase food supply during difficult times, particularly during war. By encouraging people to grow their own food, Victory Gardens created a sense of empowerment and sense of community.

UC Master Gardeners of San Luis Obispo County are employing that same spirit of community and self-sufficiency at the Oceano Victory Garden to teach residents how to grow their own food.

The Victory Garden program teaches beginning gardeners how to start their own vegetable gardens quickly and easily in a container, in a backyard or at a community garden. The four-part series is held in spring and fall and are led by trained UC Master Gardener Program volunteers. Upon completing all four classes, participants will receive a Victory Gardener certificate. Depending on the location, workshop participants may be invited to continue working together informally at the workshop site and attend group workshops.

The Garden

The Oceano Victory Garden is located at 1687 Front Street in Oceano, across from the Oceano Train Depot. Workshops are held at both locations.

Workshops

The Victory Garden Workshops serve three main purposes in the community:

To increase food production during a period of challenge.

To educate people about gardening and food systems.

To build a sense of community through gardening.

Victory Garden workshops begin again this Fall!
