About the Victory Garden Program

Historically, Victory Gardens were implemented as an effort to increase food supply in difficult times, particularly during war. By encouraging people to grow their own food, Victory Gardens created a sense of empowerment and involvement in the community.

UC Master Gardeners of SLO County are using that same spirit in the Oceano Victory Garden to demonstrate to residents how grow their own food with a series of workshops.

The Victory Garden Program is a program to show beginning gardeners how to start their own vegetable gardens quickly and easily in a container, in the backyard or at a community garden. The four-session classes are held in Spring and Fall for the local community and will be led by UC Master Gardener Program volunteers. Upon completing all four classes, participants will become UC-certified Victory Gardeners. Also, participants will continue to work together informally in a neighborhood Victory Garden circle to ask questions, get support and continue learning.

The Garden

The Oceano Victory Garden is located at 1687 Front Street in Oceano, across from the Oceano Train Depot. Workshops are held at both locations.

Workshops

The Victory Garden Workshops serve three main purposes in the community:

To increase food production during a period of challenge.

To educate people about gardening and food systems.

To build a sense of community through gardening.

Victory Garden workshops begin again this Fall!
