Biography

Hayden-Smith develops programs for youth and adult extenders in food systems/agricultural literacy, garden-based learning and youth and community gardening.  Hayden-Smith is also a practicing U.S. historian, and a nationally-recognized expert in the history of youth/school gardening; Victory Gardens; extension education; federal policy relating to agriculture/education; and the American homefront in wartime.  A Kellogg Food and Society Policy Fellow, her national advocacy work focuses on encouraging a national effort to promote school, home, and community garden and urban agriculture efforts; public policy relating to food systems, gardening, education and urban agriculture.

Her book, "Sowing the Seeds of Victory: American Gardening Programs of World War 1", published by McFarland, was released in spring 2014.

Book Summary:

Sometimes, to move forward, we must look back. United States involvement in WWI, from 1917 to 1919, is one of the most relevant to understanding and informing current work in food systems in America. During WWI, the federal government - urged on by and in partnership with private organizations and a strong grassroots effort - promoted national programs related to gardening and agriculture, programs which urged Americans to express loyalty and patriotism for the nation through voluntarism in food production and conservation efforts. While many Americans are familiar with the Victory Gardens of WWII, few realize that their origin can be found in the Liberty (and later Victory) Garden program that enjoyed widespread participation during the earlier conflict. These programs had significant effects on American food production, consumption patterns, and cultural life.

This book examines three national war gardening and agricultural programs: the National War Garden Commission, the United States School Garden Army, and the Woman’s Land Army (which some women used as a means to press for suffrage). The urgency of wartime mobilization enabled proponents to promote gardening and food production as a vital national security issue. The connection between the nation’s food readiness and national security resonated within the context of America’s political and cultural life, which was struggling to synthesize urban and rural interests, grappling with the nation’s plurality and the challenges and opportunities presented by millions of immigrants, and reconsidering the role of America in the larger world. Linking food security with national security was reinforced by the President’s decision to use War Department monies to fund one of the programs, Could the same message - that food production is vital to national security - resonate today?
