Fue durante el verano cuando John, de 15 años, llegó a la escuela popular en San José, California, con la intención de participar en uno de los talleres organizados por 4-H. John, movido por la curiosidad, decidió regresar a la escuela durante sus vacaciones para descubrir de qué se trataba. “Me dio curiosidad saber lo que iban a hacer”, cuenta el adolescente, quien se enteró del taller a través de la misma escuela.
Para ese día, 4-H había preparado un curso sobre civismo, uno de los muchos talleres que este influyente programa ofrece en todo el país. A través de actividades como esta, 4-H se dedica a formar a jóvenes como John, proporcionándoles las herramientas necesarias para convertirse en ciudadanos activos y responsables.
Como este curso 4-H realiza muchos a lo largo y ancho del país por esta razón una vez al año se reconoce nacionalmente la Semana Nacional de 4-H dirigida por Extensión Cooperativa de la Universidad de California (UC ANR). Durante esta semana, jóvenes como John participan en una amplia gama de actividades diseñadas para fortalecer sus habilidades en la resolución de problemas y la toma de decisiones. Estos talleres no solo les enseñan sobre ciencia, tecnología, agricultura y liderazgo, sino que también promueven su desarrollo personal y su capacidad para generar un impacto positivo en sus comunidades.
A lo largo de la semana, se reconocen los logros alcanzados por los participantes, quienes aprenden a través de experiencias prácticas que los preparan para enfrentar los desafíos del futuro con confianza y creatividad. Este enfoque en el aprendizaje activo asegura que los jóvenes no solo adquieran conocimientos, sino también la seguridad y las habilidades necesarias para desarrollarse en la vida.
¿Qué es 4-H?
4-H es un programa que se ofrece a través de UC ANR integrada por una comunidad de más de 100 universidades públicas en todo el país que proporciona experiencias donde los jóvenes aprenden realizando actividades. Durante más de 100 años, 4-H ha acogido a jóvenes de todas las creencias y antecedentes, brindando a los niños una voz para expresar quiénes son y cómo mejoran sus vidas y comunidades.
Los estudios han demostrado que los jóvenes que participan en programas de 4-H tienen más probabilidades de:
- Alcanzar el éxito académico.
- Asumir roles de liderazgo en la escuela y la comunidad.
- Participar en algún tipo de servicio comunitario.
4-H en Orange County
El condado de Orange aprovecha sus conexiones con los clubes de niños y niñas para invitar a la comunidad a que participe en 4-H.
Rita Jakel, especialista en educación comunitaria y coordinadora del programa de 4-H en el condado de Orange, expresó que la colaboración con el Boys and Girls Club de Garden Grove (BGCGG) espera inspirar a sus miembros a unirse a su club local de 4-H.
“Los jóvenes crearon una cuenta CLOVER antes de participar en ocho lecciones CLOVER impartidas por el personal del Boys and Girls Club durante su campamento de primavera de una semana”, dijo Jakel, señalando que los participantes fueron introducidos a 4-H antes de llegar al South Coast Research and Extension Center para actividades en persona.
San Diego se viste de verde
Para reconocer el trabajo de 4-H en San Diego, la ciudad llevó a cabo la proclamación del Día de 4H (8 de octubre), el día comenzó con una ceremonia oficial y finalizó iluminando las instalaciones del Cabildo de color verde como reconocimiento al esfuerzo que este programa realiza para impulsar el desarrollo de los jóvenes de la región.
A medida que la Semana Nacional de 4-H concluye, el espíritu de colaboración y aprendizaje se siente más fuerte que nunca. Historias como la de John son solo el comienzo de un viaje transformador hacia un futuro lleno de posibilidades. Cada taller y cada lección aprendida no solo equipan a los jóvenes con habilidades valiosas, sino que también encienden una chispa de liderazgo y compromiso cívico. Con el apoyo de programas como 4-H, estos jóvenes no solo están construyendo su propio futuro, sino también el de sus comunidades, inspirando un cambio positivo y demostrando que, cuando se les da la oportunidad, pueden lograr grandes cosas. Así, la celebración de la Semana Nacional de 4-H no es solo un reconocimiento, sino un recordatorio de que el futuro está en manos de la juventud, lista para asumir el reto y hacer del mundo un lugar mejor.

En la Escuela Popular en San José, una academia bilingüe (inglés/español) para estudiantes desde kinder hasta el octavo grado, algo emocionante está ocurriendo.
La mañana del 18 de junio, un grupo de estudiantes llegó y se puso en manos de los instructores del programa 4H de la División de Agricultura y Recursos Naturales de la Universida de California (UC ANR). Este día hay dos retos por cumplir: el primero es integrar a los estudiantes en un plan de estudios, y el segundo, servir de ejemplo sobre cómo enseñar a otros instructores a dar los cursos que 4H imparte.
“El propósito de este campamento es compartir todas las actividades con un grupo de jóvenes y, al mismo tiempo, que estas actividades y maneras en que han sido enseñadas hoy en día sirvan como un ejemplo para educadores o profesionales que trabajen en programas después de la escuela, para que ellos o ellas puedan impartir estas lecciones”, explicó Fe Moncloa, asesora emérita de extensión universitaria de UC ANR.
Las actividades que se impartieron provienen del currículom iCode, el cual utiliza tres conceptos: el desarrollo juvenil, la computación y la justicia social. Todas las actividades realizadas en el aula giran en torno a estos temas.
Uno de los estudiantes, John, de 13 años, comentó: “Yo me enteré sobre el campamento por la maestra, ella nos invitó y yo me interesé en los temas que iban a presentar. Me dio curiosidad por saber más; los temas son buenos, es algo que sí me llama la atención”.
Zubia Mahmood es una de las instructoras de 4H. Para Zubia, la clave de una buena instrucción es la adaptación. “Trato de adaptar el currículo para no ofender a nadie y hacerlo fácil y entendible para todos”, explicó Mahmood, quien además utiliza actividades que permiten romper el hielo entre estudiantes, así como entre estudiantes y maestros.
El campamento en la Escuela Popular es un reflejo de cómo la educación puede ser inclusiva y relevante, ofreciendo a los estudiantes no solo conocimientos académicos, sino también habilidades prácticas y una comprensión profunda de temas sociales. Al final del día, tanto los estudiantes como los instructores salieron enriquecidos, llevando consigo nuevas lecciones y experiencias que trascenderán más allá del aula.
