Además de provocar incendios con fines de investigación, Luca Carmignani, asesor en materia de incendios de Extensión Cooperativa de la UC para los condados de San Diego, Orange, Los Ángeles y Riverside, ha empezado a aprovechar su conexión con los campus locales de la UC ofreciendo oportunidades de aprendizaje práctico.
Una mañana de mayo, estudiantes y personal de UC Irvine y UC Riverside se reunieron en el South Coast Research and Extension Center para recolectar información en sus proyectos de investigación. El South Coast REC, ubicado en Irvine, forma parte de una red estatal de instalaciones de investigación y educación gestionadas por Agricultura y Recursos Naturales de la UC.
En una zona del campo, estudiantes de posgrado recogieron hojas y ramitas de arbustos secos, colocándolas cuidadosamente en un dispositivo que mide el contenido de humedad. En otra zona, un becario postdoctoral instaló un dispositivo que registra los niveles de partículas, dióxido de carbono y otros contaminantes atmosféricos emitidos por un incendio.
Tirtha Banerjee, catedrático del Departamento de Ingeniería Civil y Medioambiental de la UC Irvine, coordinó la jornada de campo con Carmignani. Ambos conectaron por primera vez como miembros de iFireNet, una red internacional de redes que conecta a las personas con la investigación sobre incendios, cuando Carmignani era investigador postdoctoral en la UC Berkeley.
Ahora, ambos colaboran para ayudar a los estudiantes de ingeniería y ciencias medioambientales a aprovechar el potencial de sus intereses de investigación.
Jacquelynn Nguyen, estudiante de doctorado del departamento de Ingeniería Civil y Medioambiental de la Universidad de California en Irvine, está interesada en saber cómo pueden utilizarse las cenizas de los incendios forestales y las quemas prescritas como tratamiento de las sustancias perfluoradas y polifluoradas. Las PFAS son un grupo de "sustancias químicas para siempre" que pueden encontrarse en materiales resistentes al calor -incluida la espuma de los extintores- y son extremadamente difíciles de eliminar.
Antes de que Nguyen pudiera recoger sus muestras de ceniza, Carmignani tuvo que prender fuego cautelosamente a los arbustos secos, creando una situación realista para la recogida de datos.
"Intentamos averiguar si las cenizas de estos incendios pueden utilizarse como carbón activado, que podría emplearse como tratamiento para los PFAS", explica Nguyen. "Queremos ver si este tratamiento puede absorber básicamente los PFAS y evitar que pasen al suelo y a las aguas subterráneas".
Mientras que a Nguyen le preocupa el impacto que los incendios forestales tienen en la tierra, a Soroush Neyestani, becario posdoctoral del departamento de Ciencias Ambientales de la UC Riverside, le interesa su repercusión en la calidad del aire.
Durante un incendio, es difícil determinar cuántas emisiones son resultado de las llamas frente a la combustión lenta, el proceso de arder lentamente con humo pero sin llamas, y los modelos actuales de calidad del aire no ofrecen una orientación precisa al respecto. Con un sensor de calidad del aire, Neyestani quiere cuantificar la diferencia en los niveles de emisión durante las dos fases.
"Se parte de la base de que el 50% de las emisiones proceden de la combustión lenta, pero cada incendio es diferente. Nuestro principal objetivo es mejorar la precisión de la previsión de la calidad del aire", afirma Neyestani, quien señala que le preocupa que estas suposiciones puedan no ser realistas.
Aunque el día de campo se creó pensando en los estudiantes, Carmignani aprovechó la oportunidad para pulir sus propios esfuerzos de investigación. Desde el otoño de 2022, ha estado investigando la inflamabilidad de plantas paisajísticas de bajo consumo de agua en función de diversas aplicaciones de riego.
"Cada vez que quemamos, siento que mejoramos. Obtenemos mejores datos y realizamos mejores análisis, y eso es realmente importante para nosotros, para que podamos averiguar cómo podemos aplicar nuestra investigación y medir su resultado", dijo Carmignani.
Además de acoger con satisfacción más colaboraciones con los campus de la UC y otras organizaciones, Carmignani confía en que estos esfuerzos combinados de investigación despierten el interés por la concienciación sobre los incendios forestales en todas partes.

Con el incendio McKinney acercándose sigilosamente a Yreka en el verano de 2022, Emily Jackson y su madre se enfrentaron a la enorme tarea de poner a salvo a todas sus cabras, pollos, perros y gatos, mientras el padre de Emily y su hermana gemela Lindsay estaban fuera luchando contra el fuego.
Afortunadamente, Emily y Lindsay habían adquirido conocimientos cruciales sobre la evacuación de animales a través de un proyecto de aprendizaje-servicio de 4-H que ayudaron a dirigir en 2018. Un grupo de ocho jóvenes de 4-H, de entre 14 y 18 años, había creado un folleto de "Plan de evacuación de emergencia para mascotas" (PEEP, ), destinado a educar a sus vecinos del condado de Siskiyou sobre los preparativos necesarios para el ganado y las mascotas.
El folleto, disponible en el sitio web del condado de Siskiyou, sigue utilizándose hoy en día en esta región densamente boscosa que este verano ha sufrido una nueva oleada de incendios forestales. El proyecto PEEP estaba formado por Kylie Daws, Emily Jackson, Lindsay Jackson, Will Morris, Madison Restine, Maryssa Rodriguez, Emily Smith y Callahan Zediker.
En aquellas estresantes horas de 2022, cuando el incendio de McKinney provocó una advertencia de evacuación durante la cual los residentes podían verse obligados a abandonar el lugar en cualquier momento, Emily Jackson dijo que ella y su madre tenían un plan en marcha, todo gracias a su trabajo en el proyecto PEEP.
"En aquel momento, ni siquiera se me pasaba por la cabeza", dijo Jackson, "pero ahora, mirando hacia atrás, sé que la experiencia de haber hecho ese folleto fue lo que impulsó mi proceso de pensamiento en aquel momento".
Y aunque finalmente no se pidió a la familia Jackson y a sus vecinos que evacuaran en 2022, muchos miembros de la comunidad se han beneficiado de los cientos de ejemplares del folleto PEEP en circulación, que invita a los residentes a pensar al menos en lo que necesitarían sus animales en caso de emergencia, dijo Jackson.
Se necesitaban consejos para la evacuación de mascotas y ganado
Según Jacki Zediker, coordinadora del programa regional 4-H en el condado de Siskiyou y asesora del grupo del proyecto PEEP, hasta ahora no existía un recurso de este tipo entre los materiales de preparación para emergencias del condado.
"Una pieza que faltaba era cómo ayudar a nuestras comunidades a entender que cuando evacuan, y se llevan a sus mascotas con ellos... no es tan simple como llevarse a sus mascotas con ellos", dijo Zediker, citando el ejemplo de que algunos refugios no aceptan animales - o no aceptan animales sin prueba de vacunación.
Otros elementos que hay que añadir al kit de emergencia de la mascota son comida para varios días, agua, medicamentos, artículos de confort o juguetes y fotos recientes del dueño con su animal (prueba de propiedad).
Zediker había puesto en contacto a los jóvenes con Jodi Aceves, subcomisario senior de agricultura/sellador del condado de Siskiyou, que había estado supervisando los programas de Control Animal del condado y la respuesta de emergencia.
"Hay mucha información para la evacuación de personas, pero no necesariamente para el ganado y las mascotas", explica Aceves. "Por desgracia, hemos tenido algunos incendios en los que se perdieron muchas mascotas y ganado".
Se reunió varias veces con el grupo 4-H, discutiendo los sistemas y procesos de evacuación del condado y el papel de la Oficina de Servicios de Emergencia y las fuerzas del orden, y compartiendo consideraciones clave en la preparación para emergencias - como tener un preacuerdo con alguien que podría albergar a los animales de un evacuado.
Aceves elogió a los adolescentes por resumir la información vital en un folleto breve y sencillo que los miembros de la comunidad pudieran leer y recordar fácilmente. También se mostró impresionada por la energía y el verdadero interés que los jóvenes pusieron en el proyecto.
"La mayor parte de sus vidas, todos los veranos, han estado en el fuego", dijo Aceves. "Lo llevan en el corazón, y han visto a muchos de sus vecinos y a otras personas del condado afectados por el fuego o evacuados en algún momento".
"Mi padre era jefe de bomberos voluntarios del Cuerpo de Bomberos de South Yreka; llevaba en ello desde que yo tenía dos o tres años, así que crecí viéndole ir a los cursos de formación, acudir a una llamada", explica. "Cuando tenía 15 años, me uní al cuerpo de bomberos como cadete para ayudar en la parte médica, pero cuanto más me ofrecía como voluntaria, más me gustaba también la parte del fuego".
Jackson añadió que Zediker tiene un don especial para cultivar y fomentar los intereses de los participantes en el programa 4-H y aplicarlos de forma productiva.
"Jacki era muy buena descubriendo cuáles eran nuestras pasiones y cómo podíamos plasmarlas en un proyecto de aprendizaje-servicio", dijo. "Ella sabía que a mí me gustaba mucho el fuego y ayudar a la comunidad de esa manera desde que era joven".
Zediker también ayudó a los gemelos Jackson en su proyecto de fin de carrera, un día de campo sobre seguridad contra incendios en la estación de bomberos de South Yreka. Más de 100 escolares aprendieron nociones básicas de seguridad contra incendios, conocieron a bomberos y personal de emergencias y oyeron hablar del programa 4-H a Lindsay y Emily.
Las experiencias 4-H y la tutoría inspiran carreras profesionales
Varias organizaciones también pidieron al grupo del proyecto PEEP que compartiera sus conocimientos sobre preparativos de emergencia para animales. Además de presentar un póster sobre su trabajo en la conferencia 4-H California Focus en 2018, el grupo repartió el folleto y compartió información en una mesa durante un taller del Juniper Flat Fire Safe Council y una feria de recursos.
Más allá de distribuir el folleto PEEP en reuniones de clubes 4-H, eventos escolares y reuniones comunitarias, los jóvenes han prestado sus voces para abogar por recursos de emergencia para animales. Zediker señaló que aportaron testimonios que ayudaron al condado a conseguir subvenciones para comprar más perreras portátiles.
Sin embargo, el impacto más duradero de la participación en el programa 4-H y del servicio comunitario es que esas experiencias sirvieron de trampolín para las carreras de los jóvenes adultos. Emily Jackson, que participó en el programa 4-H desde los 5 hasta los 19 años, cursa ahora un máster en biología en Cal Poly Humboldt, donde estudia cómo la extinción de incendios y otros factores han cambiado las comunidades vegetales de la zona silvestre rusa.
Ya sea formando a colegas como jefe de cuadrilla del Servicio Forestal de EE. UU. durante los dos últimos veranos, o dirigiendo secciones de laboratorio de botánica general como estudiante de posgrado, Jackson dice que se inspira en sus experiencias en el 4-H -y en el ejemplo inspirador de Zediker- para seguir una carrera en la enseñanza.
"No puedo exagerar el papel tan importante que Jacki ha desempeñado en mi desarrollo como joven adulta", afirma Jackson.
Su hermana Lindsay, por su parte, ha perseguido su pasión por el fuego hasta llegar a la academia de bomberos del College of the Siskiyous, donde también obtuvo su licencia de técnico en emergencias médicas (EMT). Jackson ha trabajado recientemente en incendios cerca de Pondosa, en el condado de Siskiyou, y ha sido bombera estacional en la estación CAL FIRE de McCloud desde 2020.
"Es difícil porque, en los últimos tres años, no he salido del condado de Siskiyou, ha habido tantos incendios aquí", dijo. "Pero es agradable poder ayudar a tu comunidad y saber que estás marcando la diferencia".
Lindsay Jackson tiene la intención de cursar una licenciatura en estudios de liderazgo en Cal Poly Humboldt con la esperanza de conseguir un puesto a tiempo completo en CAL FIRE.

Una onda expansiva de incendios forestales azotó a California. Posiblemente usted no se dio cuenta. Aunque no hubo grandes incendios que pusieran en riesgo a viviendas y el aire no se tornó denso por el humo como sucedió en el noreste del país por los incendios forestales de Canadá, si provocó otro tipo de onda expansiva.
State Farm, la aseguradora de residencias más grande de California emitió una declaración de emergencia. Al escribir esto, me doy cuenta de que mi casa está asegurada con State Farm y aunque esto puede no afectarme ahora, si pudiese ser el caso cuando decida vender mi casa o comprarme una nueva.
State Farm anunció que dejará de emitir pólizas nuevas para casas. Allstate también emitió una política similar el año pasado. Estas acciones, en esencia, reducen el grupo de aseguradoras disponibles en California y son una señal muy preocupante para todos nosotros. Además, esta acción puede significativamente alargar el tiempo que toma vender o comprar una casa en California o afectar nuestra habilidad, a largo plazo, para vender en el futuro y capturar el valor financiero que tenemos en nuestras propiedades.
La pérdida de más de 43 mil estructuras a causa de incendios forestales en los últimos diez años no ha pasado desapercibida por la industria de los seguros. Los crecientes riesgos de incendios y los costos desorbitados asociados con la reconstrucción tienen a todos conscientes de que seguir como hasta ahora ya no está funcionando.
Los legisladores de California y el Comisionado de Seguros están muy ocupados en la reestructuración del mercado de los seguros, para crear un mercado que maneje el riesgo y atraiga a un grupo diverso de aseguradoras, estabilizando la disponibilidad y asequibilidad de seguros y apoye al sector de Bienes Raíces en la economía de California.
Como miembro de grupo de trabajo estatal Risk Modeling, puedo decirles que están en debate muchos enfoques para abordar nuestros retos, incluyendo 1) permitir que los cálculos para volver a asegurar sean parte de las tarifas de seguros, 2) buscar otras maneras de financiar el Fair Plan (plan de seguros de último recurso de California) y 3) permitir que los modelos categóricos pronostiquen el riesgo para anticipar mejor las futuras pérdidas. Con la aprobación de la Proposición 103 en 1988, la fijación de tarifas ha sido impulsada por las experiencias de reclamos en el pasado. La mayoría sugiere que las pérdidas en el futuro tienen la posibilidad de ser significativamente peores que en el pasado.
El Comisionado de Seguros de California llevó a cabo una audiencia pública el pasado 13 de julio para determinar si las tarifas de seguros deben estar basadas en modelos catastróficos que puedan tomar en cuenta los cambios climáticos previstos y las medidas tomadas por los propietarios para mitigar los riesgos. El grupo de trabajo Risk Modeling del estado dará a conocer su reporte sobre este tema a finales del verano.
Aunque estos enfoques tienen muchos matices y es complicado entenderlos, existen muchas medidas que los propietarios pueden adoptar para proteger el valor de sus propiedades y mitigar los riesgos.
Dado este periodo de inestabilidad en los seguros, la mejor acción que los propietarios pueden llevar a cabo es entender y mitigar los riesgos de los incendios forestales. Reducir el material combustible, mejorar los espacios defendibles y reforzar la protección del exterior de sus estructuras contra la exposición al fuego, flamas y brasas les ayudará a convencer a las aseguradoras para que les ofrezcan cobertura contra daños a su propiedad, lo cual podría mejorar sus posibilidades para venderla y de que el edificio sobreviva a futuros incendios forestales. Promover el valor de estos cambios, como se hace con una cocina remodelada u otras mejoras a la propiedad que atraen a dueños de casas, también podría hacerse con las aseguradoras y futuros compradores. Las acciones proactivas, como actualizar las rejillas de ventilación, son una parte importante en la solución.
La ley AB 38 (2019) inició este proceso haciendo obligatorio que el vendedor de una propiedad muestre al futuro comprador las acciones tomadas para mejorar el espacio defendible en propiedades ubicadas en Zonas de Muy Altos o Altos Riesgos de Incendios Severos . En el 2025 será necesario que esta información incluya las acciones tomadas para mejorar la protección contra incendios basadas en una lista de medidas para reforzar a bajo costo ya establecida. Con el tiempo, es muy probable que estas medidas sean la clave en la negociación del precio de la propiedad y en el cierre de la venta.
También puede ser útil una valoración independiente de las medidas de prevención. El programa The Safer From Wildfires fue establecido en el 2023 para ayudar a promover descuentos en los seguros para la adopción voluntaria de medidas para la mitigación de incendios forestales; en mi opinión, puede ser usada también como evaluación para obtener cobertura. Otra opción para considerar es la designación denominada Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety's Wildfire Prepared Home. De la misma manera se pensar en ayudar a su comunidad a reflexionar sobre la situación y llevar a cabo una acción colectiva para cumplir con la designación de Firewise.

Estos fondos son los primeros en su tipo que aprueba el gobierno de California
Los fuegos prescritos o quemas controladas son una buena medida para prevenir incendios forestales de mayores proporciones. Sin embargo, siempre existe el riesgo de que puedan salirse de control y causar destrucción a su paso.
Ante esta posibilidad, el pasado 19 de junio, el gobierno estatal adoptó una propuesta para asignar veinte millones de dólares a un programa de protección en apoyo a quienes utilizan los fuegos prescritos o quemas controladas como una forma de prevenir incendios forestales.
Hasta entonces, no existía un seguro que pagara por los posibles daños causados por un fuego prescrito. El citado programa, denominado Prescribed Fire Liability Claims Fund Pilot (Fondo piloto de reclamaciones de responsabilidad civil por fuegos prescritos), cubriría las pérdidas en la “rara” ocasión que un incendio prescrito se saliera de control.
“Los incendios prescritos son una forma económica de minimizar el alcance y gravedad de los incendios forestales”, señaló el senador de California, Bill Dodd (demócrata por Napa). “Es una herramienta que han usado durante milenios las tribus indígenas estadounidenses, misma que continuará jugando un papel importante en la prevención de incendios forestales. La asignación de estos fondos representa un gran paso para mantener seguras a las comunidades de California”.
El senador Dodd presentó la propuesta de ley SB926 en el 2022 siendo aprobada recientemente. Dodd es reconocido por su liderazgo en favor de leyes a favor de los fuegos prescritos como medida para prevenir incendios forestales.
El uso de fuegos prescritos y quemas culturales — algunas veces llamados incendios “buenos” o “benéficos” — es un componente clave en el control de los riesgos asociados con los incendios forestales. Estas prácticas reducen el material combustible peligroso, ayudan a restaurar los valores ecológicos y culturales y hacen más seguras y resilientes a las comunidades ante los incendios forestales. Sin embargo, la falta de un seguro de responsabilidad para quienes las practican ha representado una importante barrera para poder incrementar el uso de fuego prescritos, aun cuando los bomberos, científicos en incendios, comunidades en riesgo y líderes tribales estatales y federales estén a favor de que se utilicen con mayor frecuencia.
Los fondos asignados a este programa piloto ofrecerán una cobertura de dos millones de dólares para los proyectos de fuegos prescritos que sean llevados a cabo por expertos certificados en quemas controladas. Estos fondos tienen el objetivo de demostrar que las quemas controladas, cuando son planeadas e implementadas cuidadosamente, representan una herramienta útil en el manejo de tierras de bajo riesgo la cual ayuda a mitigar los riesgos de incendios forestales de altas proporciones.
Este programa es el primero en su tipo a nivel nacional y es el resultado de varios años de colaboración entre una diversidad de aliados que han trabajado junto al senador Dodd, entre los que se incluyen a The Nature Conservancy, CAL FIRE, Extensión Cooperativa de California, el Departamento de Seguros de California, representantes de las tribus y muchos otros.
El director y jefe de CAL FIRE, Joe Tyler, manifestó que “el proyecto piloto derriba una barrera importante en la obtención de un seguro de protección contra daños potenciales que puedan ocurrir durante un fuego prescrito o quema cultural realizados por un especialista certificado o un practicante.
Tyler agregó que “en la medida en la que continuemos enfocándonos en la resiliencia de los bosques estatales, creando una vía para que los especialistas en quemas privados cuenten con la importante protección que estos fondos para reclamos ofrecen, significa un paso crítico hacia lograr los objetivos del Governor's Wildfire and Forest Resilience Action Plan (Plan de acción del gobernador para incendios forestales y la resiliencia de los bosques”.
“El lanzamiento de este programa es un paso clave para ampliar el manejo forestal de base ecológica con el fin de reducir el riesgo de mega incendios. Agradecemos el liderazgo del senador y el trabajo expeditivo de CAL FIRE y los practicantes de fuegos benéficos para crear este fondo, mientras que la próxima temporada de incendios forestales se aproxima rápidamente”, dijo Dan Porter, director del Nature Conservancy's Forest Program.
Este fondo también impulsará la quema cultural, apoyando a los indígenas de California para que restauren su conexión con el fuego.
“La quema cultural es una práctica esencial para cumplir con diversos objetivos, incluyendo la administración de la biodiversidad, salud ecológica y seguridad de comunidad. La disponibilidad de este fondo piloto ofrece a los practicantes de quemas culturales una protección contra riesgos financieros en el improbable caso de que una quema se salga de control. Este es un incentivo en apoyo a la revitalización de las tradiciones de quema tras el legado de las políticas que prohíben dichas prácticas”, mencionó Don Hankins, profesor de geografía y planeamiento de la CSU en Chico y cofundador del Indigenous Stewardship Network.
El recurso económico es parte de una mayor visión para la restauración de las quemas benéficas en todos los ecosistemas de California adaptados a los incendios. El año pasado, el estado dio a conocer el Strategic Plan for Expanding the Use of Beneficial Fire (Plan estratégico para expandir el uso de fuegos benéficos), el cual identificaba esto fondos como una prioridad. El estado tambien puso en marcha un programa para la certificación de expertos en quemas controladas, cambio la responsabilidad estándar para los fuegos prescritos e invirtió en asociaciones que los practican, en personal para la agencia y otros esfuerzos relacionados.
“Estamos usando todas las herramientas para proteger a los californianos, incluyendo el uso de fuegos prescritos, para combatir los incendios forestales”, manifestó el comisionado de seguros, Ricardo Lara. “El Fondo piloto de reclamaciones de responsabilidad civil por fuegos prescritos será algo crítico para asistir a nuestros grupos tribales, propietarios de tierras no lucrativas y privados que van a la cabeza. Este es un ejemplo de un gobierno innovador y que predica con el ejemplo”.
Lenya Quinn-Davidson, directora de Fire Network por parte de la División de Agricultura y Recursos Naturales de la Universidad de California mencionó que el reciente impulso es incomparable.
“Los californianos están desesperados por tener una mejor relación con el fuego y solo con enfoques innovadores como este fondo para reclamos podremos impulsar el buen trabajo que necesitamos que suceda”, opinó por su parte, Quinn-Davidson. “Es un momento difícil para estar trabajando sobre incendios en California, pero también, un momento increíblemente inspirador”.

El Hopland REC convierte la devastación del incendio forestal River de 2018 en una oportunidad de investigación
La destrucción causada por el incendio forestal se observa fácilmente, pero los peligros pueden esconderse bajo las cenizas. Un grupo de científicos de UC Davis estudió muestras de carne y lana de corderos en el Centro de Investigación y Extensión Hopland de UC, para determinar si los pastizales que rebrotan tras un incendio forestal causan residuos tóxicos en los animales de pastoreo. Los resultados, publicados en el diario California Agriculture, mostraron que pastar en dichos pastizales no alteró significativamente el contenido de metales en la carne y la lana de los corderos. Esa es una buena noticia para los rancheros y consumidores desde la perspectiva de seguridad alimentaria.
En el 2018, el incendio forestal River ardió seis millas al norte de Hopland, arrasando con dos terceras partes de las tierras del Hopland REC, incluyendo áreas en su estación de corderos. Debido a que el Hopland REC conduce investigaciones ecológicas y agrícolas, tenían información y algunas muestras del rebaño de corderos que vivió en el lugar antes del incendio River.
“Un grupo de investigadores se reunió para intercambiar ideas sobre cómo podíamos tomar ventaja de este lamentable evento”, señaló Sarah Depenbrock, profesora asistente y agrónoma en el Departamento de Medicina y Epidemiologia de la Facultad de Veterinaria de UC Davis.
Las quemas controladas han jugado un papel importante en el proceso agrícola durante muchos años, pero los incendios forestales de California están creando un nuevo paisaje que interesa a investigadores como Depenbrock. “El problema, ahora, es que los grandes incendios forestales probablemente interactúan con tierras agrícolas de manera diferente que las quemas de rutina”, manifestó la experta.
Las plantas grandes y viejas en los terrenos que no han sido quemados recientemente pueden contener altas concentraciones de metales, capturado durante sus años de desarrollo. El mercurio, por ejemplo, es un metal potencialmente peligroso que con el tiempo puede ser capturado en objetos vivientes. Estos metales pueden ser distribuidos a través de la ceniza cuanto se quema la vegetación, por lo que los científicos examinaron corderos que habían pastado en los pastizales del Hopland REC durante el primer rebrote, después de haberse quemado.
Los resultados inciertos plantean más preguntas
Los investigadores compararon carne de los corderos que pastaron en los pastizales que rebrotaron en el 2019, después del incendio River, con muestras de carne congelada que se había obtenido el año anterior al incendio. En ninguna de las muestras se detectaron rastros de plomo, mercurio, arsénico, molibdeno, cadmio, berilio, cobalto y níquel. Sin embargo, sí hubo algunas muestras (tres de 26), que dieron positivo a los no esenciales (metales pesados potencialmente tóxicos) cromo y talio en el grupo que pastó después del incendio.
Debido al reducido número de muestras que dieron positivo, los investigadores no pudieron determinar estadísticamente si esta contaminación estaba asociada con los pastizales de rebrote. Las concentraciones de cromo y talio detectadas pueden ser o no potencialmente tóxicas, dependiendo de las formas y cantidad específicas de carne que una persona consuma.
Otro aspecto del estudio incluyó el análisis de la lana de los borregos para determinar si es un buen método para medir el contenido de metales en su carne. “En general, nos dimos cuenta que no estaba bien correlacionado con la mayor parte del contenido de metales de interés, lo cual vale la pena saber. Sin embargo, debido a que no identificamos en ninguna muestra animal muchos de los metales no esenciales de particular preocupación toxicológica, como el plomo y mercurio, no pudimos determinar si el análisis de la lana puede ser útil para determinar la presencia de esos metales, como ocurre en otras especies”, dijo Depenbrocké quien agregó que la lana de los animales cuya carne dio positivo al cromo y talio, no dio positivo a estos metales.
Mientras los retos en el control de los incendios forestales persisten, lo mismo sucede con el riesgo de contaminación de los productos alimentarios derivados del ganado de pastoreo.
“No obtuvimos pruebas contundentes que nos dijeran que, cuando hay un incendio, eso significa que todo se contamina con metales pesados”, manifestó Depenbrock. “Pero si se plantea la cuestión de que quizás deberíamos realizar un poco de vigilancia para ver si esto es algo esporádico o común. Y deberíamos de encontrar la manera de cribar los rebaños”.
Recomendaciones para manejar los problemas del cobre
“Es un estudio muy pequeño, pero fue interesante conocer que el contenido de cobre fue realmente bajo en el grupo que pastó después del incendio, lo cual me hace pensar”, expresó Depenbrock.
Las enfermedades asociadas con la deficiencia de cobre es una preocupación importante en los borregos. Por ejemplo, el swayback o lomo hundido puede resultar en la muerte antes de nacer o en la incapacidad del animal de pararse por sí solo debido a los cambios incurables de la espina dorsal. Otros efectos adversos incluyen una tasa reducida de nacimientos, anemia, defectos en la lana y decoloración de la fibra y osteoporosis con un alto riesgo de fracturas espontaneas. El exceso de cobre puede también causar enfermedades graves y a veces mortales.
Muchas de las fuentes de forraje y áreas de pastizales en California tienen una deficiencia de cobre, mientras que otras fuentes de alimentación tienen un exceso de cobre. Es crucial que se monitoree a los rebaños para determinar sus niveles de minerales incluyendo el cobre.
En cuanto a las pruebas de cobre, la experta aconseja a los ganaderos que obtengan las concentraciones de minerales de los órganos de los animales que son sacrificados o mueren. Las muestras del hígado y riñones son las más valiosas para identificar un potencial problema en el rebaño. Los laboratorios de UC Davis Veterinary Medicine's California Animal Health and Food Safety (CAHFS, por sus siglas en inglés), llevan a cabo estas pruebas de manera rutinaria.
En segundo lugar, monitorear y registrar la suplementación de minerales y tercero, mantener un registro de salud actualizado para tomar decisiones informadas respecto a la suplementación basada en los problemas conocidos del rebaño. Por ejemplo, si un productor no está acostumbrado a suplementar con cobre, Depenbrock recomienda mucho que trabajen con un veterinario para empezar a hacerlo (ya que hay numerosos suplementos de cobre de concentración variada en el mercado), para determinar un plan de pruebas o examinación y revisar el historial de salud para detectar problemas que estén potencialmente asociados con el cobre.
