Lectores de este blog serán conscientes del hecho que concedió ayer el Departamento de Comestibles y Agricultura de California (California Department of Food and Agriculture, CDFA) que erradicación de palomilla marrón de manzana (light brown apple moth o LBAM) “no se ve como factible” y en su vez se enfocará en una campaña de control. Formalmente, esto quiere decir que los esfuerzos en el área de la bahía de San Francisco en cuarentena serán en contención en vez de erradicación. Sin embargo, en otros lugares más pequeños, tales como alrededor de la ciudad de Davis, todavía rige la campaña de erradicación.

¿Que quiere decir todo esto para los productores? En palabras simples, aunque la meta del CDFA e USDA habría ido de erradicación a contención, el umbral para acciones reguladoras (clausuras de campos infestados) es todavía una larva de LBAM en un campo de producción. Entonces, es imperativo que productores en el área de cuarentena NO VACILEN en sus esfuerzos de controlar los arrolladores de hoja en sus cultivos. Cualquier signo de actividad de arrolladores de hoja es una señal de proteger el cultivo.
