¡Feliz año a todos los lectores!
Pero desgraciadamente ya estamos empezando con unas preocupaciones. Debemos alertar a los productores de fresa que ahora en los primeros días del año nuevo de 2012, estamos observando una decaída de trasplantes de fresa en varios campos en el distrito de producción de Watsonville y Salinas. Este problema es capaz de ser grave y característicamente afecta una proporción grande del campo. A según a lo escuchado además de resultados del laboratorio diagnostico de UCCE en Salinas, esta decaída es bastante común y aparece ser más agudo en campos orgánicos.
En una inspección más profunda (véase a fotos 1 y 2 abajo), los síntomas semejan mucho a daños causados por niveles elevados de sal. Margines de hojas viejas demuestran los síntomas iniciales y tornan marrones, secas y quemadas. En cuanto que la condición se empeore, la hoja entera marchita y muere. Eventualmente todas las hojas pueden volverse marrón hasta morir el trasplante mismo (Foto 3 abajo). Generalmente los tejidos internos de la corona del trasplante son sanos y intactos, sin embargo durante la progresión de decaída de las plantas unas de estas coronas se descoloran y tornan marrón.
Estos síntomas de decaída y muerte de trasplantes semejan superficialmente a los síntomas de infección por Colletotrichum (antracnosis) y Phytophthora (pudrición de raíz y corona). No obstante encuestas del laboratorio no han descubierto ningún patógeno asociado con plantas afectadas. Aun más, la incidencia tan amplia, hasta 75% en unos casos, de las trasplantes decaídas no sugiera alguna agencia biótica como causa de este enigma. El problema que nos enfrenta aquí parece afectar todos los cultivos y no se restringe a un solo fuente de trasplantes.
¿Entonces, cual es la raíz de todos estos problemas? El campo que investigamos, la CE (conductividad eléctrica, una medida de salinidad) es normal y el suelo no es excesivamente salino, tampoco nunca ha mostrado estos síntomas en cultivos previos. A reiterar, síntomas de decaída ocurre en cualquier variedad, cualquier vivero (“nurseria”) y cualquier bloque. También hay una tendencia de tener daño más graves en partes más mojadas.
La falta de lluvias de este invierno puede estar tomando un papel muy importante aquí. Esta falta completa de lluvia ha obligado a los productores de regar frecuentemente através del sistema del goteo y mientras esta actividad basta para la utilidad de planta, debemos tener en cuenta que esta cantidad de agua no es suficiente para lavar las sales del suelo de la cama. Solo una lluvia o un buen riego de aspersión puede limpiar el suelo de las sales acumuladas alrededor las fajas del abono de preplantar además del amonio mineralizado que tiende a agregarse en los suelos frescos de la temporada. Altos niveles del amonio son asociados con toxicidad en las plantas tanto como de las sales acumuladas.
Estas revelaciones nos hace creer que los quemazones de hojas y decaídas de trasplantes manifestándose actualmente en prácticamente cada rincón de nuestra zona sean causados por acumulaciones de amonio y sales alrededor de raíces y carencia de lavar estos mismos fuera de las raíces, quiere decir por una falta de lixiviación.
Los problemas más severos se encuentran en campos orgánicos enmendados con fertilizante de preplantar tales como molinados de sangre o pluma. Este padrón es consistente con lo que sabemos sobre el comportamiento de estos en suelo- quier decir se deshacen, o mineralizan, completamente adentro de unas semanas después de incorporación. Por consiguiente, campos con estos fertilizantes ahora mismo están con alta probabilidad de tener cantidades significativas de amonio y sales concentradas alredor de las raíces por falta de lixiviación.
Si es cierta nuestra hipótesis, productores con campos padeciendo del problema descrito en los párrafos arriba pueden neutralizarlo por regar los campos correspondientes con riego de aspersión o por lo menos regadas pesadas a través del goteo. Riego de aspersión es como lluvia y provee la cantidad abundante del agua necesaria de llevar el amonio y sal fuera de las raíces donde están causando el mal, dejándolas recuperar.

En este blog se ha escrito paulatinamente sobre el control y manejo de drosófila de alas manchadas, Drosófila suzukii, y aunque esto haya sido útil, yo imagino que una exposición de todo de lo que sabemos de esta plaga en una página tenga aun más utilidad.
Drosófila de alas manchadas, Drosófila suzukii, origina del continente de Asia pero aparentemente migró y fue descubierta en el año 2008 en la costa central de California. Desde entonces se ha difundido esta mosca a muchas partes más de los EUA, sobre todo a los estados litorales.
Drosófila de alas manchadas se clasifica como una mosca de vinagre, de las cuales constan más de 3,500 especies. En su gran mayoría moscas de vinagre no son dañinos a la agricultura, y la verdad es que hay sólo dos o tres especies conocidas de ser capaces de causar injurias a las cultivos entre de las cuales se encuentra Drosófila suzukii. D. suzukii causa daño por oviposición de huevos en la fruta y el desarrollo de la larva en la misma de varios cultivos como frambuesa (mora), fresa, zarzamora, cereza y arándano.
Refiriéndose a la primeras dos fotos abajo se ve que el macho (foto 1) y la hembra (foto 2) de la drosófila de alas manchadas varían en su aparecer, quiere decir que el macho tiene una mancha en la parte trasera del cada ala, mientras la hembra no demuestra esta distinción. Por su parte, la hembra tiene un órgano para depositar huevillos muy distinto y visible abajo de la lente del microscopio (foto 3) en la parte inferior del abdomen. Con este órgano abre la hembra una apertura en la piel del fruto.
En los tres años desde la infestación inicial, la Universidad de California en un esfuerzo colaborativo de organizaciones privadas y públicas ha formado un programa bastante efectivo contra esta plaga. Productores de los cultivos afectados se recomienda seguir los siguentes pasos:
Monitoreo: Es importante saber cuando los primeros individuos de drosófila de alas manchadas van entrando en los campos de producción. Hasta el presente, parece que el consenso de la comunidad científica es usar trampas llevando cebos de vinagre de cidra hecha del zumo de manzanas o cebos de una mezcla de levadura + azúcar + agua (7 gm levadura, 4 cucharadas azúcar, 300 ml agua, lo que es suficiente para 4 o 5 trampas), quizás con unos tres o cuatro trampas por hectárea, sobre todo a las orillas del campo. Las trampas se pueden manufacturar de varias contenedores; la trampa en la cuarta foto abajo es un ejemplo (foto 4).
Uso de Pesticidas: Pesticidas tienen un papel importante en el control de drósofila de dos manchas. Hemos comprobado que malatión, varios piretroides y formulaciones de spinosyn son los más eficaces y dan por lo menos dos semanas de control. Formulaciones de neonicotinoides, abamectina, aceites, y varios reguladores de desarrollo de insecto no funcionan contra drosófila de alas manchadas en nuestros estudios. Es de suma importancia de darse cuenta de los insectos benéficos del campo y usar los insecticidas en una manera de proteger estos lo más posible.
Higiene del campo: Trabajos investigativos llevados a cabo en este otoño del año 2011 nos ha demostrado que sí en infestaciones pesadas de drosófila de alas manchadas un régimen fuerte de limpieza del campo es eficaz en reducir la probabilidad de contaminación de fruta cosechada (foto 5). El fundamento de esta actividad es fácil de comprender, dado que quitar fruta vieja y no cosechada del campo no les deja cumplir el ciclo de vida a las moscas y entonces suprime la población a su mínimo. Sin embargo, al acuerdo con nuestras investigaciones, en los casos de infestaciones ligeras, no se nota mucha diferencia entre campos esforzando un programa de higiene y campos que no.
Se menciona pesticidas y otros productos para el control de drosófila de alas manchadas en este artículo. Antes de usar unos de estos productos cualquier, se ruega actualizarse con el registro del producto, restricciones del uso y información del usuario en su oficina local del Comisario de Agricultura.

El tiempo tan cálido de la semana pasada ha causado una cierta cantidad de insolación en la fruta de mora (frambuesa) de nuestra zona. Tal como se ve en las fotos abajo, insolación se manifiesta como un color blanco a marrón de las drupas las cuales normalmente son rojas.
El episodio actual de insolación se pone en correlación con las temperaturas altas de la semana pasada, y esto es consistente con lo que hemos visto en el pasado. Cuando en la costa central vayamos repentinamente de temperaturas constantes de 70oF (21 oC) a 90 oF (32 oC) acompañada con una ausencia de niebla, experimentamos casi sin lugar a duda aumento en la incidencia de insolación.
Mientras aparece que insolación de fruta de mora sea causada por simplemente calor, es en realidad algo más complicado y de hecho es radiación solar que causa el problema. Aparentemente esta radiación origina suficientes cambios fisiológicos en la fruta de descolorarla pero no hasta el punto de ser necrótico inmediatamente. Aire húmedo, lo cual en nuestra área tiende a ser fresco, pesado de niebla, distribuye y absorbe radiación del Sol, mientras aire caliente tiende de no llevar mucha humedad y subsecuentemente la potencia de distribuir radiación y prevenir estos rayos de dañar las drupas. Tiempo de viento es aun peor, ya que esta llevando la humedad fuera del cultivo.
Hay unas soluciones a este problema. Uno, lo más impractico, es introducir humedad de arriba por aspersión al cultivo de la mora. Es mejor por supuesto en este caso a hacer esta actividad por la mañana para asegurar que las flores y la fruta quedan secas antes de la noche. Otra solución es usar una manera de media-sombra a cubrir las plantas. Esto es algo que muchos productores de mora en nuestra zona están cumpliendo en la forma de los túneles ya ampliamente utilizados. Finalmente, se sabe que unas variedades son más susceptibles a la insolación, así que si uno está teniendo problemas con una variedad es mejor buscar otra.
