He recibido yo varias llamadas en la semana pasada a cerca de una chinche diminuta que está invadiendo varios campos principalmente de la fresa. Es bueno hacer una identificación correcta de esta, ya que normalmente no necesita un tratamiento fuerte para controlarla.
Esta chinche, con el nombre científico Nysius raphanus, pertenece a la misma familia de la chinche lygus, pero al contrario de la chinche lygus la cual conocemos bien como enemigo, fuera de su gran número y posibilidad de contaminar fruta cosechada, no es dañina. En la mayoría de los casos no se necesita hacer aplicaciones de pesticidas para controlarla.
Esta pequeñita tiende a ser más común en años del clima fresco y húmedo, tal como 2020 y empiecen a migrarse a los campos cultivados cuando la vegetación alrededor se seca. La migración principal no dura más que dos semanas, y ya que esta movilización toma lugar en las horas frescas del día, sería interesante tratar mantenerlas allá a través de un buen mojado por riego de aspiración.

Las enfermedades del suelo están causadas por patógenos que residen en el suelo, tales como los hongos Fusarium oxysporum, Macrophomina phaseolina y Verticillium dahliae. Estos patógenos son capaces de sobrevivir en el suelo por largos periodos de tiempo gracias a que forman estructuras de resistencia. Por este motivo, el transporte de suelo a través de herramientas o maquinaria puede ser una fuente de inóculo de estas enfermedades. Para demostrarlo, hicimos un experimento en el cual manejamos un tractor a través de un campo infestado con el patógeno. Después, tomamos restos de suelo pegados al tractor para ver si el patógeno estaba presente y en qué cantidad. Del mismo modo, una persona caminó por el rancho, y tras ello, el suelo de sus zapatos también se analizó.
El experimento se llevó a cabo en Febrero de 2020 en el campo experimental del departamento de Fitopatología de la Universidad de California, Davis. El rancho usado es conocido por estar infestado con el hongo de suelo Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lactucae, el patógeno que causa la Fusariosis de la lechuga. El inóculo se calculó contando unidades formadoras de colonias por gramo de suelo. Una unidad formadora de colonias (UFC) es una estructura de resistencia viva o tejido vegetal colonizado por el patógeno. Usando esta unidad de medida, el resultado fue que el campo estudiado estaba infestado con 243 ± 154 UFCs por gramo de suelo. Este valor representa la media ± el error estándar (un valor que indica la variación entre repeticiones). La cantidad de patógeno en el suelo procedente de las ruedas y el rotavator (rototiller) se calculó en 60 ± 19 UFCs por gramo de suelo. El hongo también estaba presente en suelo tomado de la botas, con un total de 56 ± 18 UFCs por gramo de suelo.
El suelo infestado que se transporta con la maquinaria o con las botas de trabajo puede introducir el patógeno en una nueva zona. Por este motivo, es aconsejable limpiar la maquinaria y los zapatos antes de moverse entre ranchos y asegurarse de que no se transporta suelo de un sitio a otro. Esto se debe hacer siempre y no sólo cuando se conoce que el rancho está infestado, ya que el patógeno puede estar presente a bajos niveles sin mostrar síntomas de enfermedad. Por ello, ¡ningún terreno puede ser clasificado como libre de patógenos!

El extensionista de la extensión cooperativa de la Universidad de California Mark Bolda proveerá un entrenamiento sobre la palomilla marrón de la manzana (LBAM en sus siglos en inglés), lo cual calificará a los participantes a ser buscadores aprobados en relación con el Acuerdo de Conformidad para exportación de fresa y mora a Canadá. A cumplir este entrenamiento breve, cada participante será certificados con el condado con esta clasificación.
El entrenamiento tomará lugar en español este 11 de marzo en la oficina de la UCCE en Watsonville, 1430 Freedom Blvd, Suite E, y empezará a las 9 en punto.
Todos son bienvenidos a participar, aunque no tienen intención de mandar fruta a Canada. No se ofrecerá horas de educación continuada para este evento.

La reunión anual de investigaciones de producción de fresa tomará lugar este 5 de febrero en el Salinas Sports Complex en la 1034 North Main en Salinas. Dese cuenta que el lugar este año NO está en Watsonville como en todos los años pasados.

Un aviso a todos que tomará lugar un evento breve de educación agrícola de manejo de nitrógeno en la fresa de la Costa Central. Un buen contenido poniendo énfasis del uso de nitrógeno, sobre todo la utilidad de abonamiento preplantar, en el campo.
El lugar es Ramos Farms en 880 Airport Boulevard en Watsonville (esto es el terminal de Airport en el sur de Highway 1), empieza a las 1030 de la mañana, y sigue hasta el mediodía. Después se servirá un plato excelente de mariscos.
¡Será un buen evento para ponerse a entender un poco más sobre este tema tan importante. Valdrá la pena si uno dispone el tiempo!
