About the Program
The UC Master Gardener Program trains community volunteers to serve as educators, using University of California research-based information. Master Gardeners promote environmentally responsible and sustainable horticulture practices in home, school and community settings. If you have not already done so, we encourage you to visit our website to learn more about our work.
Applicant Qualifications
We look for applicants who can demonstrate the following:
-Community service experience, incorporating gardening
-Knowledge of basic gardening principles
-Experience giving presentations or speaking to the public
-Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds
-Initiative in developing and completing projects
-Familiarity with email and the internet, as well as regular access to a computer
-Willingness to learn and share UC research-based information
-Commitment to representing the University of California and following all program policies
If you are still building experience in one or more of these areas, we encourage you to explore our "Grow LA Garden Program." These affordable classes are offered in the spring and fall and provide hands-on learning in a four-session weekend format. Additional volunteer experience with environmental/urban greening organizations (such as TreePeople), local arboreta/botanical gardens, school and community gardens, or similar programs can help strengthen future applications.

Eligibility and Selection Process
Any Los Angeles County resident, age 18 or older, is eligible to apply. Applications are reviewed once annually in the fall. The program is highly competitive. Typically, we receive around 125 applications for approximately 50 available spaces.
While gardening and volunteer experience are important, we consider a range of factors when selecting participants. Applicants who are not selected are welcome to reapply in future years.
Time Commitment
We encourage all prospective applicants to carefully consider the significant time commitment that will be required in the first year. The training program includes:
-Thirteen full-day Saturday classes in the spring
-A minimum of 50 volunteer service hours completed by June 30 of the following year
If your current schedule does not allow for this level of commitment, we recommend waiting to apply until your availability changes.
Fees and Scholarships for the 2027 Training
The training class fee is $375. This covers all expenses: Master Gardener Handbook, Master Gardener badge (upon graduation) and other training materials.
We offer partial scholarships to those accepted into the program and are seeking financial assistance to access the training. Scholarship recipients can receive up to $200 toward the training fee.
