Who We Are
The UC Master Gardener Program, part of the University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE), extends research-based horticultural and pest management knowledge to home gardeners across the state. For over 100 years, UCCE has partnered with local communities to address agricultural and natural resource challenges. Building on this foundation, the UC Master Gardener Program was established in 1981 and now thrives in 50 UCCE county offices with over 6,000 active members.
UC Master Gardeners are a diverse group of individuals united by their passion for horticulture, a commitment to lifelong learning, and a desire to serve their communities. They act as vital partners in the University of California's outreach efforts.
Serving Santa Cruz, Monterey, and San Benito counties, the UC Master Gardeners of Monterey Bay was established in 1995. Since then, they have trained hundreds of volunteers who have contributed thousands of hours educating local gardeners through hotlines, information booths, events, community and school garden support, workshops, and classes.
Rooted in education and grown in service, UC Master Gardeners receive university training in exchange for volunteer service and public outreach. The program promotes sustainable gardening practices, helping Californians protect natural resources. By tailoring its outreach to the unique landscapes of the Monterey Bay area and the diverse needs of California residents, the UC Master Gardener Program ensures its educational efforts are both relevant and impactful.

- Gardening Advice - Ask a Master Gardener: Connect with us for expert gardening advice.
- Monthly Newsletter: Stay up-to-date on timely gardening tips, best practices, and a calendar of upcoming classes and events.
- Demonstration Gardens, Programs, & Projects: Explore our demonstration garden located at Pinto Lake in Watsonville, showcasing successful techniques for home gardeners, including edible gardens, water-wise landscapes, and California native plants.
- Educational Events & Classes: Expand your gardening knowledge by attending our diverse range of workshops and classes held at various locations countywide.
- Annual Plant Sale: Join us for our Spring and Fall Plant Sales, featuring a wide selection of seedlings for sale, horticultural information, and opportunities to connect one-on-one with UC Master Gardeners.
