Small Scale Urban Agriculture Project

Project Details

Project Goal: Demonstrate how best to grow several high-value crops in containers on a small scale in Southern California and clarify how to find and access vacant land that is available for agricultural use.

What we’re growing: blueberries, ginger, and turmeric

What we're testing: blueberry varieties, potting mixes, fertilizers, pest and disease control measures, and plant health management practices

What data we're collecting: blueberry yield, ginger and turmeric rhizome weight, pest and disease presence

Land Mapping: more info coming soon!

For more information about the project purpose please visit our project page.

Questions we hope to answer:

Is it feasible and profitable to grow these crops on this scale?

What containers and soil mix should you use?

How often should you water the plants and add fertilizer, and which fertilizer should you use?

What pests and diseases will you encounter and how can you manage them?

Which blueberry varieties will produce the most fruit?

Which management practices will yield the most ginger and turmeric?

How can you find vacant land in San Diego County?

How can you access land and use it for agriculture?

Our demonstration site is located at the Carlsbad Flower Fields. When you're visiting the Flower Fields, you can take a self-guided tour and have questions answered by Master Gardener volunteers on Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays between 10am and 4pm. To set up a guided tour, reach out to Heidi Holmquist at hholmquist@ucanr.edu with "Urban Agriculture Demonstration Site Tour" in the subject line and we'll get back to you about scheduling a tour.
