Cutworms are moth larvae that hide in the soil during the day, and then come out at night to feed on plants. They get their name from their ability to "cut off" a seedling at ground level by chewing through the stem at or just below the soil level.

Painted Ladies: Yes, They Do!

Yes, they do, and yes, she did. Painted lady butterflies, Vanessa cardui, do lay their eggs on Echium wildpretii, commonly known as "the tower of jewels." However, this little lady (below) persistently returned a few times to find a bee-free spot.

I hope everyone is doing well, despite pollen counts and less than desirable social conditions. Things are heating up across California, as evidenced by Mark Bell's attempt to move to a cooler work spot. I've had to turn on the window AC unit, making it a bit noisier during Zoom meetings.
