TSWV Field Risk Index and Thrips Projections

Welcome

Welcome to the web resource for integrated management of Western Flower Thrips and Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus in the California Central Valley.

The site contains two tools to help in disease risk management:  There are region-specific blogs that give brief summaries of thrips development and TSWV risk through the growing season, focusing mainly on the first half of the season when the risk of crop damage is highest for most crops. These updates are based on a thrips population projection model.  This is driven by degree-day accumulation at several locations in in the Central Valley and lets us make projections about the time when thrips generations are hatching, developing, and adult numbers are peaking.

The second tool is a version of the model which users can run on any device with a web browser.  This version uses a map-based interface.  You simply zoom in to the location for which you want a thrips projection, click on the map and press the button.  The model displays the degree day accumulation and thrips development stages on one graph and the temperature for the selected location on a second graph.

You can access the map-based interface by clicking here.

The research behind these tools was supported by the California Tomato Research Institute (CTRI).
