Build a Tahoe-Friendly Garden

Create a landscape that works with Tahoe’s climate, reduces wildfire risk, and uses less water by following these steps:

Design for Tahoe Conditions

  • Defensible space: Reduce flammable vegetation near your home to lower wildfire risk.
  • Healthy Soil:  Improve soil to retain moisture and support long-term plant health.
  • Water-Wise Gardening:  Use efficient irrigation and climate-appropriate plants to conserve water.
  • Work With Nature:  Support pollinators and wildlife while managing their impact on your yard.
  • Grow Food Successfully:  Adapt your approach to Tahoe’s short growing season and unique conditions.

Choose the Right Plants

The easiest way to get started is by selecting plants that are already suited to Tahoe’s environment. A curated list of easy-care plants is available at local nurseries, which have been selected for low water needs, fire-resistant characteristics, and healthy growth in Tahoe conditions.  For a more comprehensive list, refer to Tahoe Friendly Gardens Native & Adapted Plants list.

See How Your Garden Stacks Up and Get Recognized

Not sure if your garden is Tahoe-friendly yet? Take a quick, voluntary survey to share your current practices, identify easy improvements, and track your progress over time.  When your garden meets Tahoe Friendly standards, you can receive a Tahoe Friendly Garden Certificate and display a yard decal to help inspire your neighbors and community.

Top Tahoe Plants for a Tahoe Friendly Landscape

Created in partnership between the UC Master Gardeners of Lake Tahoe and the Fire Adapted Communities program, a Top Tahoe Plants "go-to" selection guide is available for download. Thank you for your interest in the Tahoe Friendly Garden Project. This is a non-regulatory, voluntary sign-up administered by the UC Master Gardeners of Lake Tahoe. Our goal is to encourage residents of Lake Tahoe to garden in a manner that strives to fit our local conditions.

The Tahoe Friendly Garden Project encourages gardens that use less water, fertilizer, and pesticides, and includes a diversity of plants and landscape options.

Tahoe Friendly Garden will ensure that the right plants are in the right place.

    Conserve your time and resources by being water-wise! Choose appropriate plants for Tahoe’s climate and utilize efficient irrigation systems.

How to certify your garden in 4 easy steps:

  2. Receive a “Tahoe Friendly Garden” Certificate.
  3. Proudly post your sticker decal to demonstrate your support.
  4. Encourage your neighbors and friends to participate!

*If you don’t meet the minimum requirements this time, please do not worry. This is an on-going program. Feel free to peruse the resources to make adjustments and then come back to the survey. You can also call our office, attend one of our workshops or become a Master Gardener yourself to hone your skills.
