What is Green Jobs: Exploring Forest Careers?
A new unit for helping learners aged 12–25 explore green careers in forestry and conservation. Green Jobs: Exploring Forest Careers is designed for adults working with youth in settings ranging from community youth programs to school classrooms or with college-aged students as part of college and career prep.
Participants can receive training either through state-run in-person workshops or online PD (expected launch June 2020). When completing a training, participants will receive a copy of Green Jobs: Exploring Forest Careers. The unit is available as an e-book and printed guide and can also be purchased by educators directly from shop.plt.org.
The new unit includes four hands-on activities that introduce learners to forest jobs.
- Who Works in This Forest? – Learners meet some of the people who work in and on behalf of forests, and research different forest sector careers to find out what it takes to perform these jobs.
- Hundred Hectare Wood – Acting as foresters, learners grapple with decisions about how to ensure that a forest serves all the needs it must serve.
- Monitoring Forest Health – Through a variety of health indicators, learners assess the health of a forest area and see how soil scientists, wildlife biologists, arborists, and other forest professionals monitor forests.
- Seeking Sustainability – Learners explore the concept of sustainability by examining the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations, while also looking at some jobs involved in ensuring forest sustainability.
