Thank you for the post, recipes and the story.  
 
I missed out on picking up an Excalibur dryer with the timer at a silent auction a few months ago. (couldn't get there in time) Found out that it sold for $20. Arrrgh!!!  
 
I've dried chilis by just stringing them and hanging them, which takes longer obviously. I use mine in fermentation experiments. Making spicy fermented pickles, veggies etc, but have also ground them up for a big pot of chili.

Sorry about the miss on the Excalibur. To get mine, I was checking craigslist everyday and when I found it I jumped on it.  
 
The thing about grinding up spicy pickled veggies and putting them in a pot of chile sounds good--I'm going to try it.
