Imperial County

Greetings from Imperial County!

NEW UCCE Imperial County Master Gardener Coordinator

Gradient Welcome to the Team Greeting Instagram Post

Hi, my name is Jessica Delgado, and I am so excited to be the new UC Master Gardener Coordinator! I have been an Imperial Valley resident all my life, having graduated from Central Union High School, Imperial Valley College, and the Imperial County University of Phoenix branch. My professional career began with El Centro Elementary School District in 2002 and really defined my passion for education. After earning my Bachelor of Science in Human Services and becoming a certified mental health facilitator, I began my work at Pioneers Memorial Hospital while also substitute teaching at local elementary schools. All I saw while driving from work site to work site were agricultural fields which led me to my next adventure: opening a small garden to table restaurant. For 7 years, I was able to connect with many local small gardens and community members to really explore the benefits of eating in season, fresh, local produce. The last two years I was a Community Education Specialist II with CalFresh Healthy Living, UCCE team. I am hoping that my experience with local small gardens and delivering of nutrition education enhanced with gardening lesson will be an asset to serving our community.

“Academic success depends on research and publications.” Philip Zimbardo

Philip Waisen, UCCE Vegetable Crops Advisor for Imperial & Riverside counties recently won the West Regional (California) published photo award for “Root Leachate Treatment Increased Melon Plant Growth in Low Desert Growing Conditions” during the National Association of County Agricultural Agents (NACAA) 2024 Annual Meeting/Professional Improvement Conference held in July.

The picture is of a field trial that was conducted to examine with and without tomato root leachate treatments on melon in Coachella Valley, Riverside, CA. Root leachate treatment significantly increased canopy cover by 4%. The published photo shows visual differences in melon plants as affected by root leachate treatment; the left row was treated with root leachate and the right row was not treated.

All of us at UCCE Imperial County are so proud to have such an amazing professional on our team. Congratulations on this award and here is too many more!
