Pierce’s disease (PD) is caused by the pathogen Xylella fastidiosa subsp. fastidiosa, a xylem-limited bacterium that affects water transport in the host. Xylella fastidiosa is transmitted by xylem-feeding insects: sharpshooters and spittlebugs.
