Black Fig Fly - Wilson Lab @ UC Riverside

Management

Biological Control: Biological control of the BFF appears to be very limited. The only reported natural enemy is a generalist pupal parasitoid known to attack dozens of different hosts. Surveys to date in California have not revealed any additional parasitism.

Cultural Control: In the absence of biological control, orchard sanitation is critical and fig growers should make sure to remove and destroy any fruits infested with BFF.

Chemical Control: Chemical control recommendations are rather limited as well. BFF larvae inside of infested fruit are protected from pesticide sprays and there are no effective soil drenches for pupal control. Our team is currently researching the use of proteinaceous bait sprays for control of the adults, but the studies are still underway.
