Eggplants

Amadeo Eggplant

Amadeo 
65 days / Dark purple / Fruit to 5" wide and 8" long

The heaviest-bearing eggplant is also the most delicious. Amadeo is renowned for its huge yields of succulent, nutty, bitterfree fruit on spineless plants. Easy to pick and irresistible on the tongue, this is the eggplant you need for the veggie patch. You will probably need to support it once it begins bearing the heavy 5-inch-wide, 8-inch-long dark purple to black eggplants.

Orient Express Eggplant

Orient Express
58 days / Dark Purple / Fruit to 1½"-2½" wide and 8"-10" long

Dark purple Asian type eggplant. The fruits are attractive, slender, and glossy, sized 8 to 10 inches long by 1½ to 2½ inches in diameter. The fruit is ready up to two weeks before other early varieties. The plant features an ability to set fruit in cool weather as well as under heat stress. Tender, delicately flavored and quick cooking.

If you love Orient Express, check out this new hybrid Asian type eggplant!  The semi-spineless plants are robust and prolific, producing tender skinned fruits that do not get bitter and never need to be peeled. The original improved artichoke, Green Globe flowers in early summer. The flower buds are deep green with a light purple tinge. A good harvest of 3-4 heads can be expected throughout the summer. They are 3-5 inches in diameter and have wonderfully thick, flavorful hearts. Proven to be the most hardy and remain productive for at least 5 years.

Blauhilde can only be described as SPECTACULAR!  Why?  Because both this climber and its beans are HUGE, because the plant, its rose-purple flowers and the deep purple pods are BEAUTIFUL, and because it's TASTY! The vine can reach 9 feet tall, and the pods stay tender and stringless, even grown to 10 inches long. With good resistance to mosaic virus, what's not to like about this German heirloom?  Best eaten fresh, not dried.

Dark green pods with distinctive purple streaks grow up to 8 inches long.  Dried seeds are light buff with splashes of dark brown, resembling a rattlesnake.  Vigorous vines up to 10 feet. These are very tasty when young & tender, but can be canned, frozen or left on the vine to dry.

You Fong Wong Yard Long

Many have been asking for an Asian long bean, and now it's here! You Fong Wong is an extra long bean, producing shiny, green, up to 24 to 36 inch pods that are best picked at 12 inches for maximum tenderness.  They are thick-skinned and tolerant to storage, while remaining tender and delicious – ideal for stir-fries, soups, and curries. These high-yielding plants are also tolerant of heat and most diseases. Expect low-maintenance plants with a climbing, vigorous growth habit.

Lemon Cucumber, High Mowing Seeds

Small, rounded, pale yellow cucumbers.  Pick at 1½ to 2½ inches in diameter, just before yellow shows. This versatile cucumber is sweet and flavorful, and doesn't have much of the chemical that makes other cucumbers bitter and hard to digest. Though it's often served raw, it's also a good pickling cucumber.  Note: this one is very late to begin bearing.

Marketmore has been the standard for slicing cucumbers since the 1970's. This one is an improved strain with terrific disease resistance, smooth, straight growth and thin, dark green skin. Harvest these cukes at about 8 to 9 inches long for best quality. It's unbeatable for both flavor and appearance.

This one is a long time favorite! Known to be fast growing and early maturing, it produces prolific yields of shiny bright yellow crooknecks. The fruit holds well after picking - a great advantage for a high yielding plant. Pick on the small side for best flavor.

An attractive zucchini, this variety has waxy, gold skin with a creamy white interior.  7 to 8 inches in size, it provides an excellent yield of blemish-free fruits.  Golden Glory is also resistant to watermelon and zucchini yellow mosaic viruses and powdery mildew.

Taot Bat Put Summer Squash

Teot Bat Put 
65-70 days / Green / To 4" diameter and 6" long
This summer squash is enjoyable as a freshly sliced snack, saute, stir-fry, or even grated for zucchini bread.  Nicknamed avocado squash because of its shape, it has glossy green skin, light yellow flesh, and a wonderful, sweet flavor. It is easy to grow and has good fruit set. Ripe fruits measure about 4 inches wide and about 6 inches long. Train to climb a vertical support for best air circulation and ease of harvest, or leave to sprawl on the ground. ("I grew this last season and it was by far the most prolific summer squash in my garden. And it produced from June to October!  I used it exactly as I use zucchini (including zucchini bread!), with excellent results. That's high praise from a true zucchini lover.")

A Master Gardener favorite!  Distinctive, slender fruits are yellow with faint white stripes and light-green blossom ends. Harvest young, at 4 to 6 inches, for unusually delicious, nutty flavor and firm texture. Vigorous, high-yielding plants. Edible Flowers: Blossoms bear a mild, squash-like flavor and are great stuffed and fried, or sliced for use in soups, omelets, salads, and pasta dishes.

Sweet Reba Acorn Winter Squash

Acorn, Sweet REBA 
90 days / Orange flesh / Fruit to 1½ pounds
This is a high yielding, uniform, disease resistant variety known for good sugar production. REBA stands for Resistant Early Bush Acorn. If you are acorn-averse, try REBA, because this Cornell University release is one of the sweetest acorns, with dry and substantial flesh. Despite a compact bush habit, expect heavy yields of 1 to 1½ pound fruit. This should be a crowd pleaser!

Butterbaby Butternut Winter Squash, Johnny's Selected Seeds

This true mini is an adorable butternut with wonderful flavor and good color. Its short vines produce fruits  4 to 6 inches long and offer about two servings each. Ripe squash can be stored 3 to 4 months.

Waltham Butternut Winter Squash, True Leaf Market seeds

This 1970 All-America Selections winner from Massachusetts is still the benchmark for large butternuts. Larger fruits with small seed cavities and thick, straight, cylindrical necks. The flesh has smooth texture and sweet flavor, particularly after 2 months of storage.

Sunshine Kabocha Winter Squash, Johnny's Selected Seeds

95 days / Deep Orange-Red / Fruit to 3-5 pounds
This AAS winner bears stunning, scarlet fruit.  The tender flesh is smooth, sweet, and bright orange - ideal for baking, mashing, and pies. Deep scarlet fruits are slightly flat-round, averaging 3 to 5 pounds on vigorous, short vines. Sunshine's appearance and eating quality are superior to other varieties of this type. No need to peel this one - the skin is thin and nutritious! Can be consumed at maturity, or stored. Average 3 to 4 fruits per plant.

High yielding, semi-bush variety with slightly sweet, nutty flavor. Average 3 pound fruits with a yield of 4 to 6 fruits per plant. Good companion plant for sunflowers.  Bake like other winter squash, then flake out the noodle flesh into tasty spaghetti-like strands.  To store fruits for later use, keep them cool and dry.

Astia is a bush zucchini variety developed especially for container growing and planting in small space gardens.  Early bearing and productive, the abundant zucchini develop near the base of the plant where they are easy to harvest. These uniform glossy-green zucchini have excellent flavor! The non-rambling, compact squash vines are also highly ornamental with big silvery-green, deeply indented leaves.

Black Beauty
45-60 days / Dark Green / Harvest at 6" to 8"
A 1956 All American Selections winner, this heirloom summer squash grows on a compact, high-yielding bush (not a vine). Dark green fruit is best picked when 6 to 8 inches long. Easy to grow and great for freezing! Enjoy eating the blossoms as well.

These compact, bush type plants are at home in the garden or a large container.  Bush Baby produces striking fruit with light and dark green stripes and have a wonderfully delicate, satisfying flavor. Bred to produce smaller fruit, their best size for picking is 2 to 6 inches, but the non-stop plants deliver a higher than average overall harvest.

This is a new hybrid variety with great disease resistance! The open plants have fewer spines resulting in less skin irritation and easier harvests. The stem is firmly attached to the fruit but snaps easily for harvest. Has traditional medium-dark green fruit.

Astro has strap-shaped leaves, less deeply lobed than many, with a milder flavor. Heat tolerant and slow to bolt, it still prefers the cold soil of early spring and fall. Plant in fertile, moist, well-draining soil in full sun to part shade.

Georgia Southern Collard, Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds

Collard Greens, Georgia Southern
75-85 days / Green 
A great old Southern favorite! This pre-1880 heirloom gives huge yields of very tasty greens. And it has good resistance to heat and cold. In its 1921 catalog, the J.J. Wilson Seed Co. noted that the variety, with its large, tender leaves, "should be better known." We concur!

These Japanese mustard leaves are delicious. Featuring broad, curly leaves with serrated edges grown on a round stalk. The mature plant is still delicious but will be much spicier!

Genovese is a classic Italian variety, with authentic flavor and appearance.  It's tall and relatively slow to bolt with large, dark green leaves about 3 inches long. Plant height is 24 to 30 inches.  This common strain of Genovese basil can present some variability in leaf shape and plant size.  Edible flowers: use the flowers in any recipe that calls for basil or to garnish drinks, salads, soups, pasta and desserts.  The flavor is of intense basil.
