The Chaparral plant community is composed of drought adapted shrubs that can thrive on hot, dry slopes and shallow soils. Chaparral habitat occurs on its own and as mosaics of vegetation with grassland and woodland habitats on dry, south facing slopes. The most common plants are chamise, manzanita, ceanothus, scrub oak, and yerba santa. Understory species are similar to oak woodlands and include sulfur and nude buckwheat, yarrow, perennial bunch grasses, California fuchsia and clarkia. Look for the chaparral clematis vine in our garden, a profuse and long summer bloomer with creamy white flowers followed by attractive, fluffy seedheads.
