Recipes

Tips for successful food demonstrations include:

  • Ask the families which foods they would like to try. Prepare recipes with fresh fruits and vegetables in season.

  • Find recipes that use both fruit and vegetables. Since children often like fruit more than vegetables, pairing is a good way to introduce new vegetables.

  • Use familiar ingredients in new ways. Add a vegetable to a traditional Latino recipe. For example, see Broccoli Quesadillas or Pumpkin Atole.

  • Bring the containers to explain why certain foods are healthier choices than others. For example, show that low-fat plain yogurt is lower in calories and added sugar than flavored, sweetened yogurt.

  • Choose recipes that are easy to prepare and have locally available ingredients.

  • Ask families if they have any food allergies  and  change recipes accordingly.
