Videos for all?
In our digital and always-connected age, it seems almost everyone loves a good video. Did you know “how to” videos are the second most popular type of video viewed on YouTube (behind “product review” videos)? Videos are a great way to share your practical information.
To help ANR staff and academics learn to make effective videos, the Strategic Initiatives leaders are planning a series of “how to produce good video” workshops. Stay tuned for early 2020.
Want to get involved? We welcome suggestions (content) that you can send to any of the SI leaders. We also welcome suggestions on people to help plan and implement the video workshops. We will also support webinars on this topic (e.g., WebANR or SI Spotlight Webinars).
The workshops will be implemented in partnership with Strategic Communications, News and Information Outreach in Spanish (NOS), UC IPM and the Communications Advisory Board.
Knowledge Stream gains traction
Got practical information to help people? You can help people find your practical information. Interest in and contributions to the Knowledge Stream blog (“news you can use”) is growing. These practical stories connect people to solutions for their real-world problems. The stories are not only featured in the Knowledge Stream blog, but can be featured on one of the six Focus Areas of the ANR website and/or one of the flexible UC ANR home page tiles.
Submit your story at https://ucanr.edu/blogs/KnowledgeStream. Remember to include links to your practical information sources.

During the ANR town hall Thursday, Nov. 21, VP Glenda Humiston shared encouraging news, including new sources of funding, response to the UC regents tours and the new report “California's Working Landscape: A Key Contributor to the State's Economic Vitality,” which shows working landscape accounts for 6.4% of the state's economy. She also answered questions from town hall participants about the budget and other issues.
John Fox, Human Resources executive director, and Nikolai Schweitzer, Staff Assembly chair, announced ANR's results of the recent UC Staff Engagement Survey of non-represented staff. Of the 222 ANR employees responding, Schweitzer said most thought we made progress in wellness, performance management and supervision. Satisfaction declined for image/brand, career development and sustainable engagement. He said Staff Assembly plans to discuss opportunities for improvement in those areas, then meet with ANR senior leadership to suggest solutions.
The results and executive summary of the survey are posted at http://staffassembly.ucanr.edu/Council_of_University_of_California_Staff_Assemblies/2019_Staff_Engagement_Survey.
Fox announced that in the spring ANR will conduct a survey to gather similar information from all ANR employees, including academics.

Forums at UC Davis Dec. 13 and UCLA Jan. 14
Storbeck/Pimentel & Associates, a woman and minority-owned executive search firm, has been selected to help identify candidates and facilitate a global search for a new president of the University of California.
In accordance with Regents Policy 7101, the special committee to consider the selection of a president met with advisory committees in early November to consult on the criteria for the position of university president. The advisory groups included faculty, students, staff, alumni, campus chancellors, laboratory directors and vice presidents. The special committee considered this feedback and other written comments received to draft new criteria. On Nov. 14, the Board of Regents approved criteria, which can be found on the presidential search website.
College Futures Foundation, in conjunction with the University of California, is sponsoring two forums with the special committee to gather input from higher education associations and other organizations in the field of postsecondary education, workforce and economic development, and student success. College Futures Foundation works to ensure equity of opportunity and access to higher education in California.
The forums will be held at UC Davis on Dec. 13, 2019, and at UCLA on Jan. 14, 2020. These will be open to the public and there will be an opportunity for public comment at each forum. Additional information can be found on the presidential search website.
The special committee will hold additional town halls on UC campuses in early 2020, and is planning to schedule other opportunities to meet with constituent groups of the university.
“The special committee looks forward to hearing the observations and advice of members of the university community to inform the search process for the next president of the University of California,” said committee Chair Gareth Elliott.
For more information, see https://presidentialsearch.universityofcalifornia.edu. Additional information will be posted on this website as it becomes available. Input from the public regarding the search is welcome and can be submitted by mail to Anne Shaw, Secretary and Chief of Staff to the Regents, 1111 Franklin Street, 12th Floor, Oakland, CA 94607 or by email to UCPresidentSearch@ucop.edu.
The members of the special committee to consider the selection of a president are Regents Michael Cohen, Gareth Elliott, Cecilia Estolano, Sherry Lansing, Lark Park and Richard Sherman; Student Regent Hayley Weddle; Alumni Regent William Um; and Gov. Newsom and Board of Regents Chair John A. Pérez as ex officio members. Regent Elliott is the chair of the special committee and Regent Lansing is vice chair.
