Tengo actualizado el campo padeciendo quemadura de sal descrito por la primera vez el 6 de enero de este blog.
Como se puede acordar, se determinó regar a aspersión después de descubrir tanto daño de sal con el fin de lavar las sales acumuladas fuera de las raíces. Así como se ve en la primera foto abajo hizo el productor.
Aun más, como se dibuja en la segunda y tercera foto abajo, el campo ya casi está completamente recuperado. Las plantas son verdes, grandes y en flamante formación de flor y fruta. Mientras el campo parezca demorado un poco en su ciclo de producción por la injuria causada por sal, no se puede dudar que la situación de ahora es una más feliz que la de enero, puesto que haya muy poco evidencia de quemadura y las plantas en plena recuperación.

Son desde hace más de 30 años que la Universidad de California publicó una guía de cómo hacer diagnosis de nutrientes en la hoja de fresa. (Publication 4098, ‘Strawberry deficiency symptoms: a visual and plant análisis guide to fertilization, publicado en 1980). En los años desde entonces, prácticas de producción y expectativas de rendimiento han cambiado dramáticamente. En 2010 empezamos un proyecto, auspiciado por la Comisión de Fresa de California, a fin de re-evaluar los rangos de suficiencia de nutrientes de hoja y de peciolo. Contando con la colaboración de muchos productores de fresa de los distritos de Watsonville- Salinas y Santa Maria colectamos muestras de hojas y pecíolos de más de 50 campos de producción de la variedad ‘Albion’ de las campañas de producción de los últimos dos años. De cada campo se colectó cinco veces por la estación, desde la primavera hasta el fin de setiembre, con el intento de documentar el rumbo de concentraciones de nutrientes de antes de producción de fruta hasta el periódo pos-producción. Muestras de hojas fueron analizado por concentración toda de nitrógeno (N), fósforo (P), potasio (K), calcio (Ca), magnesio (Mg), azufre (S), zinc (Zn), manganeso (Mn), hierro (Fe), y cobre (Cu). Pecíolos fueron analizados para concentraciones de NO3-N, PO4-P y K.
Después de cumplir la estación de producción los productores participantes nos dieron información sobre su rendimiento, lo que nos dio la oportunidad de categorizar los campos como de ‘rendimiento alto’ y ‘rendimiento bajo’. Entonces aplicamos un proceso llamado ‘DRIS’ (Sistema de Diagnosis y Recomendación Integrado) a evaluar matemáticamente la diferencia entre concentraciones de nutrientes tanto como proporciones de estos entre campos de rendimiento alto y rendimiento bajo. Este proceso nos permitió a identificar cuales de los campos de rendimiento alto fueron idealmente balanceado nutricionalmente. De este grupo de campos de rendimientos altos y balanceados nutricionalmente, fuemos habilitados de calcular un rango de suficiencia ‘DRIS’ para cada nutriente en cada etapa de crecimiento del cultivo.
La Figura 1 abajo demuestra que concentraciones de N, P y K fueron lo más alto antes de empezar la cosecha, lo cual fue hacía el fin de febrero en Santa Maria y hacía el fin de marzo en Watsonville – Salinas (“sampling stage 1" en el gráfico abajo) y después declinaron a un nivel razonablemente estable durante el trascurso de la cosecha (“sampling stages 3 a 5", quiere decir mayo a julio en Santa Maria y junio a agosto en Watsonville-Salinas). El declive en concentraciones de macronutrientes en las hojas durante el pico de la cosecha se esperó de antemano porque pasa lo mismo en muchos cultivos fructíferos por el hecho de que las hojas trasladan nutrientes a la fruta en desarrollo. Por la otra mano, concentraciones de micronutrientes subieron desde la primera etapa a la plena cosecha en el caso de boro, calcio y hierro, o quedaron estables y no cambiaron por toda la estación. Las barras verticales por cada punto de dato en la figura 1 abajo enseñan un rango de valores típico de los campos de rendimiento alto y balanceados nutricionalmente. Estos son los rangos de suficiencia de ‘DRIS’ y se puede confiar que estas concentraciones de nutrientes son adecuadas para producción fuerte y de alto rendimiento.
La Tabla 1 abajo pone en forma la lista los rangos de suficiencia de nutrientes en la hoja para las etapas de pre-cosecha y de la cosecha. Para comparar, ambos rangos de suficiencia dados en la publicación 4098 de UC y de la guía actual de la Universidad de Florida se incluye aquí también. Aunque para la mayoría de los nutrientes los rangos se equivalgan mucho, para otros hay diferencias notables. Cuando el rango de suficiencia de DRIS sea significativamente más alto que otros recursos (por ejemplo Ca, Mn y Fe) es porque estos sean consumidos en niveles muy en exceso de lo que necesita la planta. Para estos nutrientes un resultado del laboratorio marginalmente abajo del rango DRIS no será una cosa preocupante.
Para unos nutrientes (N, Zn y Cu) el rango de suficiencia de DRIS cayo debajo de otras recomendaciones. Tenemos confianza que los rangos de DRIS representan suficiencia de nutrientes por el hecho de que fueron determinados por medir niveles común en campos de fresa muy productivos. Por usar una sistema de encuestas de muchos campos, se aseguró un rango amplio de condiciones y prácticas del agricultor. También, para los tres nutrientes la concentración promedia de los campos de rendimiento alto y rendimiento bajo fueron prácticamente igual, lo que sugiere que la disponibilidad de estos nutrientes no limitó rendimientos.
La Figura 2 abajo demuestra las tendencias de concentraciones de nutrientes de peciolo por el correr de la estación. Niveles de nitrato (NO3-N) de peciolo fueron tan variables a hacer estos prácticamente sin valor como un método diagnostico. Durante el pico de la cosecha de fruta, lo cual será nuestras fechas de muestras 3 y 4, nitratos de peciolo en campos de alta producción variaban de menos de 200 ppm hasta 2,600 ppm. Mientras creemos que concentración total de hoja sea más confiable, los datos de este estudio nuestro sugieren que mantener nitratos de peciolo arriba de 1000 ppm antes del comienzo de cosecha y arriba de 400 ppm durante el pico de la cosecha sea adecuado a mantener productividad alta. Dado la alta variabilidad de nitratos de peciolo es posible que concentraciones menos de 400 ppm sean adecuadas durante el verano.
Niveles de fosfatos (PO4-P) de peciolo fueron menos variables que niveles de nitrato en el peciolo. Mantener los fosfatos arriba de 1,200 ppm por el correr de la estación debe asegurar suficiencia. Dado la alta disponibilidad de fósforo en los suelos de la costa californiana en rotación con cultivos de verduras, este nivel probablemente es más que el dicho valor crítico. Mantener potasio (K) arriba de 2.5% antes de empezar la cosecha y arriba de 1.5% durante el pico de la cosecha parece ser adecuado.

¡Feliz año a todos los lectores!
Pero desgraciadamente ya estamos empezando con unas preocupaciones. Debemos alertar a los productores de fresa que ahora en los primeros días del año nuevo de 2012, estamos observando una decaída de trasplantes de fresa en varios campos en el distrito de producción de Watsonville y Salinas. Este problema es capaz de ser grave y característicamente afecta una proporción grande del campo. A según a lo escuchado además de resultados del laboratorio diagnostico de UCCE en Salinas, esta decaída es bastante común y aparece ser más agudo en campos orgánicos.
En una inspección más profunda (véase a fotos 1 y 2 abajo), los síntomas semejan mucho a daños causados por niveles elevados de sal. Margines de hojas viejas demuestran los síntomas iniciales y tornan marrones, secas y quemadas. En cuanto que la condición se empeore, la hoja entera marchita y muere. Eventualmente todas las hojas pueden volverse marrón hasta morir el trasplante mismo (Foto 3 abajo). Generalmente los tejidos internos de la corona del trasplante son sanos y intactos, sin embargo durante la progresión de decaída de las plantas unas de estas coronas se descoloran y tornan marrón.
Estos síntomas de decaída y muerte de trasplantes semejan superficialmente a los síntomas de infección por Colletotrichum (antracnosis) y Phytophthora (pudrición de raíz y corona). No obstante encuestas del laboratorio no han descubierto ningún patógeno asociado con plantas afectadas. Aun más, la incidencia tan amplia, hasta 75% en unos casos, de las trasplantes decaídas no sugiera alguna agencia biótica como causa de este enigma. El problema que nos enfrenta aquí parece afectar todos los cultivos y no se restringe a un solo fuente de trasplantes.
¿Entonces, cual es la raíz de todos estos problemas? El campo que investigamos, la CE (conductividad eléctrica, una medida de salinidad) es normal y el suelo no es excesivamente salino, tampoco nunca ha mostrado estos síntomas en cultivos previos. A reiterar, síntomas de decaída ocurre en cualquier variedad, cualquier vivero (“nurseria”) y cualquier bloque. También hay una tendencia de tener daño más graves en partes más mojadas.
La falta de lluvias de este invierno puede estar tomando un papel muy importante aquí. Esta falta completa de lluvia ha obligado a los productores de regar frecuentemente através del sistema del goteo y mientras esta actividad basta para la utilidad de planta, debemos tener en cuenta que esta cantidad de agua no es suficiente para lavar las sales del suelo de la cama. Solo una lluvia o un buen riego de aspersión puede limpiar el suelo de las sales acumuladas alrededor las fajas del abono de preplantar además del amonio mineralizado que tiende a agregarse en los suelos frescos de la temporada. Altos niveles del amonio son asociados con toxicidad en las plantas tanto como de las sales acumuladas.
Estas revelaciones nos hace creer que los quemazones de hojas y decaídas de trasplantes manifestándose actualmente en prácticamente cada rincón de nuestra zona sean causados por acumulaciones de amonio y sales alrededor de raíces y carencia de lavar estos mismos fuera de las raíces, quiere decir por una falta de lixiviación.
Los problemas más severos se encuentran en campos orgánicos enmendados con fertilizante de preplantar tales como molinados de sangre o pluma. Este padrón es consistente con lo que sabemos sobre el comportamiento de estos en suelo- quier decir se deshacen, o mineralizan, completamente adentro de unas semanas después de incorporación. Por consiguiente, campos con estos fertilizantes ahora mismo están con alta probabilidad de tener cantidades significativas de amonio y sales concentradas alredor de las raíces por falta de lixiviación.
Si es cierta nuestra hipótesis, productores con campos padeciendo del problema descrito en los párrafos arriba pueden neutralizarlo por regar los campos correspondientes con riego de aspersión o por lo menos regadas pesadas a través del goteo. Riego de aspersión es como lluvia y provee la cantidad abundante del agua necesaria de llevar el amonio y sal fuera de las raíces donde están causando el mal, dejándolas recuperar.

Uno de los misterios de nuestra industria de fresa en la costa central es el fenómeno de la planta amarillenta en ciertas partes del distrito, especialmente en unos campos al norte de la ciudad de Salinas. Lo que sigue es una discusión de lo que se sabe hasta el presente sobre este amarillear, además un tanteo a compartir algo de información que hemos agregado acerca de esto.
Aunque hayan varias causas del amarillear de la planta de fresa, como un ejemplo carencia de nitrógeno, hierro o zinc, el amarillear de las fresas en Salinas parece originarse de otra cosa y ocurre en el mismo lugar año tras año. De hecho, unas parcelitas de uno metros cuadrados muestran los mismos síntomas cada vez que se planta fresas allí. Sin embargo, plantaciones subsecuentes de lechuga o brócoli no demuestran ninguna seña de amarillo.
A dirigirse la corriente de pensar que el amarillento provenga de alguna deficiencia nutricional, con varias colegas he tomado muchas muestras de estas plantas amarillas y jamás descubrí algo extraordinario. Considere la tabla abajo la cual es una comparición repetida ocho veces sacado de un campo de fresa al sur de Castroville con amplias áreas amarillas en una finca llena de plantas normales y verdes.

Lo que ve uno de inmediato en la tabla arriba es la inclinación de las plantas amarillas de tener niveles MÁS altas de los nutrientes esenciales que sus contrapartes aparentemente más sanas. Interesantemente, manganesio es mucho más alto, y una evaluación estadística nos dice significativamente, en las plantas amarillentas que en las plantas verdes.
Así que la suposición que las deficiencias nutricionales causen este amarillear de las plantas no es respaldado por las evidencias de un análisis de los tejidos de la planta. Por cierto, amarillear de carencia de nitrógeno es más notable en las hojas del exterior y viejas en cuanto la planta trasporte este nutriente movible a las hojas más jóvenes. Deficiencia de zinc generalmente tiene una penumbra de verde por los margines de la hoja. Tal vez los síntomas son consistentes con los de hierro, y realmente la concentración el hierro de la muestra del suelo alrededor de la planta verde es significativamente más alta que la de amarilla. Sin embargo, los niveles de hierro en la planta son bien arriba de los niveles descritos como críticos por UC Publication 4098 y el trabajo del abonamiento de fresa de Profesor Tim Hartz en 2010.
Una consideración de todo este trabajo es que el amarillear es causado por saturación y la falta consecuente del oxígeno disponible a la planta. Esto no quiere decir necesariamente agua ni saturación fácilmente medida a la superficie del suelo. Es también posible que salinidad, la cual tiene una relación inversa a la cantidad del oxígeno disuelto en el agua, tenga un papel.
Plantas responden a niveles del oxígeno en maneras diferentes y unas especies son de hecho muy sensible a esta condición. Raíces, como el órgano que enfrente el éstres de la condición de poco oxígeno en el suelo saturado, responden por cambiar de respiración a un metabolismo fermentativo la cual aumenta la demanda para carbohidratos. Que este cambio metabólico en fresa es la causa de amarillear que conocemos en Salinas es algo que se debe explorar. Como una idea final, considere la foto abajo en donde la cinta del goteo se trancó y menos agua fue mandada a esta cama por varia semanas. El resultado fue un aminoramiento de amarillear de las plantas de esa cama, y sólo esa cama. Absolutamente no es una evaluación muy científica, pero sí señala que la cantidad del agua alrededor de la planta tenga algo que ver con el grado del amarillo que toma.

En el mes de mayo, productores de fresa en el distrito de producción de Watsonville y Salinas han reportado síntomas tales como debilidad de planta, carencia de tamaño, descaído de producción y desplome. Inicialmente, los síntomas son acompañados de hojas viejas con perdido de color normal verde con un comienzo de tornarse un verde lánguido a gris. Luego, estas hojas mismas se marchitan, desploman, se secan y tornan a un color marrón. En la parte inicial del desarrollo de la enfermedad, las hojas marchitadas se encuentran solo a un lado u otro de la planta. Sin excepción, el follaje muerto se restringe a las fueras de la corona mientras las hojas de las partes interiores de la corona se ven sin síntomas. Evaluación de las plantas afectadas reveló que las raíces fueran normales y sin enfermedad cualquiera. El tejido interno de la corona se parece sano sin ser descolorado. En los campos afectados, plantas sintomáticas se encuentran al azar por cualquier parte del campo.
Plantas entregadas al laboratorio diagnóstico de Extensión Cooperativo de la Universidad de California fueron investigadas para un rango amplio de los patógenos. Todas estas muestras se demostraban positivas por el patógeno de marchitez de Verticillium (Verticillium dahliae) y negativos por Macrophomina, Fusarium entre otros patógenos.
Confirmar marchitez de Verticillium en su propio campo de producción es por supuesto un hecho preocupante para productores. Actualmente las únicas opciones eficaces son rotación del cultivo, plantar fresa en lugares sin suelos infestados o esterilizar el suelo con un fumigante. De tal manera que V. dahliae sobrevivirá en el suelo por muchos años aun el la ausencia de una planta hospedera, esta enfermedad es un problema preocupante de largo plazo por productores. La mayor preocupación es en cuanto nuestra producción mude del uso de la combinación de bromuro de metilo y cloropicrina, estas situaciones lamentables ocurrirán con más frecuencia.
El patógeno de Verticillium sobrevive en el suelo a través de producir estructuras resistentes y microscópicas llamadas microsclerotia. Así que microsclerotia estén en el suelo, productores deben de recordar que el movimiento de cantidades significativos de suelo infestado a través de lodo llevado por tractores, arados entre más equipos agricolas, trasladarán el patógeno a lugares todavía no infestados. Científicos también han notado que microsclerotia pueden ser encontradas en números elevados en residuos viejos de fresa. Tómense cuenta que la variedad de V. dahliae que infecciona fresa puede infectar a otros tipos de planta tales como lechuga.
