Join 4-H in Contra Costa County

Welcome to Contra Costa 4-H! This page explains how youth can join 4-H, who is eligible, how the club year works, and how to choose projects.

When You Can Join

The 4-H club year runs from July 1 through June 30 each year.
Although youth can join any time, most club meetings and project activities happen between August and May.
If you want to participate in county-level events, it’s best to enroll before April 1.

Who Can Join

Primary Members – Ages 5–8

Youth who are 5 years old by December 31st of the program year can join as Primary Members. Primary members take part in fun learning activities that are suitable for their age, but they do not participate in certain competitive events or larger projects.

Regular Members – Ages 9–18

Youth who are 9 years old by December 31st of the program year and have not reached age 19 by December 31st of that program year are eligible to join as Regular 4-H members.

Within these age groups, there may be additional membership categories such as junior, intermediate, and senior members. Some events and activities are designed for specific age groups to make sure they are appropriate and fun for everyone.

How to Choose Your Club and Projects

  1. Choose a Primary 4-H Club
Start by selecting the club you will join based on where you live and when meetings are held.
  2. Pick Your Projects
Once you choose a club, review the list of projects that club offers and decide which ones you want to take this year.

  3. Explore Countywide Projects
In addition to your club’s projects, there may be additional projects offered countywide. Ask your Primary club leader how to join these.

Clubs usually give their members first choice for projects. If a club project has space and the project leader is willing, you may be able to join a project at another club. You must check with the project leader to see if space is available and confirm that the meeting times work for your schedule.

It’s important to be realistic about how many projects you choose. Taking on too much can make it hard to participate regularly.

For Parents and Guardians

Parents are encouraged to consider volunteering to lead a project if they can. Leading a project helps broaden the choices available to youth and strengthens the program. If you volunteer, please commit to following the guidelines for successful projects.
