Contra Costa County 4-H Youth Development Program

4-H helps young people build skills, confidence, and character through hands-on learning.

In Contra Costa County, youth ages 5–18 can explore projects, serve their communities, and grow as leaders — all with the support of trained adult volunteers.

What Is 4-H?

4-H, the largest youth development organization in the nation, helps young people to reach their full potential as competent, confident, leaders of character who contribute and are connected to their communities. UC 4-H serves youth 5-19 years-old throughout California in urban, suburban and rural communities.

In UC 4-H, youth design and participate in their own programs and activities. This unique learn-by-doing model teaches essential skills that youth will use throughout their lives. Whether youth are building rockets, raising companion dogs, or planting vegetables, UC 4-H gives young people the skills they need to thrive and succeed.

Projects may include:

  • Animal science

  • Outdoor cooking

  • Robotics and STEM

  • Public speaking

  • Arts and crafts

  • Community service

  • Leadership development

Every club is led by screened and trained adult volunteers.

Who Can Join?

4-H is open to:

  • Youth ages 5–8 (Primary members)

  • Youth ages 9–18 (Regular members)

  • Adults who want to serve as volunteers

No previous experience is required.

Families from all backgrounds are welcome.

How 4-H Works

UC 4-H Community Clubs are comprised of youth ages 5-19 years-old who are supervised by approved adult volunteers. Throughout the year, youth participate in one or more age-appropriate self-chosen projects. UC 4-H Clubs elect (youth) officers and have an approved constitution and bylaws to govern the club. Project groups and Community Clubs typically meet in the evenings or on weekends.

Youth also have opportunities to participate in a wide range of county, regional or state events and conferences where they meet other youth, learn new skills, provide a community service and/or show their project work.

Members:

  • Choose projects

  • Set goals

  • Practice skills

  • Present their work

  • Serve their community

Youth are encouraged to try new things, speak in front of groups, and take leadership roles as they grow.
