Soil Stewards Climate Field Trip

New Soil Stewards Climate Action Field Trip at Elkus Ranch!

Students in fourth through sixth grade can join us this winter.

Educating youth about soil health
Youth learning about the importance of a well functioning ecosystem

In this NGSS-aligned field trip, students will explore the garden, visit Elkus’ animals, and draw connections between healthy soil, climate change, and nutrient cycling. Most importantly, they will learn about how they can be a part of solving climate change at their home and school.

Students learn what healthy soil looks like
Learning about healthy soil health

The program begins with an opening circle, exploring how plants and healthy soil are among the most powerful tools for combating climate change.  In the garden, participants take part in a hands-on experiment and scavenger hunt to discover what makes soil healthy and how we can care for it.

A visit at the compost pile and upper barn introduces the concept of nutrient cycling and highlights the role of composting in sustaining ecosystems.

And of course, students will get to visit with our herd of donkeys and goats, where they will get up close with these creatures that are an important part of nutrient cycling at Elkus Ranch.

To extend the learning beyond the field trip, we provide both pre- and post-lesson plans that teachers can use to deepen and reinforce students’ understanding.
