Supporting small farms to thrive through research, education and technical assistance
The UC Small Farms Network is a statewide program that connects small-scale farmers to evidence-based research, educational resources, and financial assistance. Our team of Small Farms Advisors and program staff work directly in communities across California, offering practical, locally relevant support to:
- Small and diversified family farms
- Beginning and limited-resource farmers
- Growers of specialty crops not reached by traditional commodity-based support programs
The UC Small Farms Network is a statewide program of the University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources (UC ANR), integrated within the UC Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program (UC SAREP).
Why It Matters
Small farms are essential to California agriculture and the communities they serve. In fact, most farms in California operate on a small scale—64% operating on fewer than 50 acres—contributing to local food systems, regional economies, and ecological and agricultural biodiversity. Yet, small and diversified farms face barriers to accessing technical assistance, research, and training designed for their specific needs.
