Managing fuels around your home and property is an essential part of living with fire. Fuel management helps to reduce the risk of ignition around your home and property while creating safer conditions for emergency responders during fire.
Careful use of prescribed fire is an effective way to remove fuel from your property. Burning (hand or mechanically stacked) piles or broadcasting fire across the landscape can safely reduce fuel loads and mimic natural wildfire processes. While there are risks, many can be mitigated by planning and working with your local fire agencies.
University of California Resources
- The UC ANR Fire Network website includes information on prescribed fire permitting and writing burn weather prescriptions.
- UC ANR regularly hosts workshops on prescribed fire around the state.
More Resources
- Find a prescribed burn association (PBA) near you to learn more about prescribed burning in your area. PBA members help each other implement burns by providing labor, equipment and skills. The PBA can help with burn planning and organization, and provide additional prescribed fire equipment and specialized expertise. The CalPBA website includes burn planning resources and permitting regulations.
Regional prescribed fire councils provide a venue for practitioners, state and federal agencies, academic institutions, tribes, coalitions, non-governmental organizations, and interested individuals to work collaboratively to promote, protect, conserve, and expand the responsible use of beneficial fire.
- The Nature Conservancy's Fire Learning Network facilitates collaborative planning, implementation, adaptive management, and the sharing of lessons learned. Workshops, peer learning and innovative fire training through Prescribed Fire Training Exchanges (TREX) are just a few of the mechanisms the network uses.
