UC Oaks

UC Oaks provides science-based information on the ecology and stewardship of California's oak woodlands. UC Oaks is also a repository of 24 years of science-based research and outreach conducted from 1986 to 2010 by the UC Integrated Hardwood Range Management Program (IHRMP), a collaboration among the University of California, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, and the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.
Members of the UC ANR Oak Woodland Conservation Workgroup have continued research and outreach efforts started by the IHRMP. Members of the Workgroup include UC Specialists; campus faculty who study range, wildlife, and forestry; county-based Livestock, Natural Resource, Forestry, Fire, and Horticulture Advisors; and many other biologists, ecologists, and foresters working with many different agencies and NGOs.
![]() Urban Oak CareWhile the main focus of the IHRMP was to address oak and oak woodland conservation in wildlands, it became apparent right away that many people were also very interested in how to manage their oak trees in their backyards. | ![]() Planners & PolicyThere are many threats to oaks, but one of the most significant today is the impact from residential and commercial development. Local planning plays a key role in oak woodland conservation. | ![]() Livestock Management on RangelandsUnlike much of the land at higher elevations which is publicly owned, 80% of the oak woodlands in California are privately held. The majority is used for grazing, primarily for beef cattle. |
