Large Animal Advisory
The 4-H Animal Science Education Advisory Committee is comprised of a diverse and representative group of San Diego County 4-H YDP youth, volunteers, and staff with an interest and expertise in animal science education. The purpose of the committee includes the following:
- Represent the interests of large animal activities and programs throughout the state
- Enhance the effectiveness of the educational deliveries and opportunities for the animal science education program
- Establish direction for statewide animal science programs and identify opportunities for youth interested in the program
- Determine the animal science training and development needs of volunteers and youth and assist in delivering appropriate training opportunities
- Gather input on program direction, events, educational opportunities and other matters pertaining to the animal science program
- Develop and maintain project competencies and proficiencies for animal science projects
- Locate, review, and make recommendations on animal science educational materials
- Seek collaborative opportunities with other groups or organizations as appropriate
- Assist in the development and management of a process for 4-H animal science involvement and participation at the state fair
- Assist in the development of a handbook outlining policies, procedures and best practices for 4-H involvement in fairs and expositions
Cattle are raised as livestock for meat (beef), dairy products (milk), and labor (pulling carts, plows, etc). Cattle today are the basis of a multi-billion dollar industry worldwide. 4-H members primary engage in either beef or dairy cattle projects.
Goats are a longtime domesticated species. For thousands of years, goats have been used for their milk, meat, hair, and skins. 4-H members may elect to learn and care for angora, dairy, or meat. Pygmy and nigerian dwarf goats are considered part of Small Animal Advisory.
Swine (pigs) are farmed for their meat, called pork. Pigs are exhibited at agricultural shows, where they are judged either as stud stock or as meat animals. Pigs are known to be intelligent animals and have been found to be more trainable than dogs or cats. 4-H members in swine project select between market or breeding projects.
Sheep were one of the earliest animals to be domesticated for agricultural purposes and are primarily valued for their fleece and meat. A sheep's wool is the most widely used commodity of any animal. 4-H members primary select between either market or breeding 4-H sheep projects.
Llamas are generally very friendly and pleasant to be around. They are extremely curious, and most will approach people easily. Llamas have historically been used as pack animals and for their wool. 4-H llama projects are an option for 4-H members; however, they are not as common.
