Culturally Supportive School Environments Contribute to Academic, Emotional, Social Success (UC Davis Web)
A UC Davis study reveals that culturally supportive school environments significantly enhance students' academic, emotional and social outcomes across diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds. Students with high levels of culturally relevant support show increased school engagement, while those with lower support are less engaged. Interestingly, white students with moderate to high support levels have higher academic aspirations. These findings underscore the importance of integrating cultural relevance in educational practices to foster positive student experiences. For more details, visit the full article here.

Accessibility means making sure your content is available to as many people as possible. When you make your PDFs accessible, it means adding tags, bookmarks, alt text and other information that makes the files readable to users of assistive technology. It's now much easier to use Microsoft Word and Adobe InDesign to create valid, accessible PDF files. In this course, instructor Chad Chelius explains why accessibility is important and what features an accessible PDF should include, before showing you how to make an existing PDF file accessible using tools in Adobe Acrobat. Contracts and Grants Director Kathy Nolan retires
Kathleen Nolan, director of ANR Office of Contracts and Grants, retired July 1 after 24 years of service to the University of California, the last 11 years serving UC ANR.
“I have had the privilege of working with Kathy throughout her years with ANR, and found her to be a pillar of strength, competence, dedication and of service for the division,” said Tu Tran, associate vice president of business operations.
Nolan is recognized for providing exceptional leadership to her OCG team. With a high-level of professionalism and expertise in research administration, the OCG team has played a critical role in promoting and enabling the growth of ANR's research enterprise.
“When Kathy joined ANR, the volume of contract and grants was less than $30 million annually,” Tran said. “That portfolio has today grown to over $100 million. Kathy led the team that helped ANR achieve this level, while providing our academics with outstanding and exemplary customer service, as consistently evidenced in our customer service surveys.”
Prior to joining ANR, Nolan was associate director of Operations, Technology & Training in UC Davis's Office of Sponsored Programs. She began her UC career in 2002 as a contracts analyst for the UC Davis Offices of Sponsored Programs and Business Contracts, then became a contracts and grants officer in 2004. From 2007 to 2009, Nolan was the coordinator of Government Contracts and Grants at the UC Office of the President for systemwide research administration.
Nolan earned a B.S. in business administration–finance from California State University, Sacramento, and a J.D. from UC Davis School of Law.
Kimberly Lamar, associate director, has agreed to serve as interim director of Contracts and Grants until the position is filled.
Extension Foundation invites applications for grants, due Dec. 22
The Extension Foundation is accepting applications for the New Technologies for Ag Extension (NTAE) Program — an initiative funded by the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) in partnership with the University of New Hampshire.
The goal of the New Technologies for Ag Extension grant is to incubate, accelerate and expand promising work that will increase the impact of the Cooperative Extension System in the communities it serves, and provide models that can be adopted or adapted by Extension teams across the nation.
Four types of projects
The grants are intended to spur development of projects that lead to local impact and align with both USDA Strategic Goals and the ECOP Program Priority Areas. Project leaders may apply for one of the four types of projects this grant will support: Incubation, Acceleration, Expansion and Scaling.
Programs with a special focus on diversity, equity, inclusion and climate are encouraged, but not required. All land-grant universities are welcome to apply regardless of membership status, but UC ANR is a member of Extension Foundation.
Depending on the type of project, teams may receive fellowships of up to $100,000, and all projects receive support from Extension Foundation "Catalysts, Coaches and Key Informants." Catalysts are experienced Cooperative Extension administrators who provide mentorship and guidance to projects, and Key Informants have subject matter expertise across areas such as publishing, evaluation, partner development, leadership and team development, marketing, communications and more. Through NTAE, the Extension Foundation provides a set of services most projects rarely have access to — services create deeper impact and greater sustainability for the project.
Community is Our Jam
Amira Resnick, statewide director of community nutrition and health, benefited from the NTAE resources after she received a grant last year for a project that addresses the connection between food safety, food insecurity, food waste and health equity. The Community is Our Jam publication, produced with NTAE staff including Rose Hayden-Smith, emeritus UC Cooperative Extension advisor for digital communications in food systems, offers an in-depth look into the UC Master Food Preserver program.
Apply at https://webportalapp.com/sp/ntae. For more information, visit https://extension.org/2023/11/15/extension-foundation-announces-new-technologies-for-ag-extension-funding-opportunity-applications-due-december-22nd-2023.

Senior faculty are incredibly powerful. In a two-page tenure letter, they can make or break a career. This power has an outsized impact on scholars with marginalized identities, such as Black academics, who are promoted with tenure at lower rates than their White colleagues. We suggest that this difference in tenure rates is due to an implicit, overly narrow definition of academic excellence that does not recognize all contributions that Black scholars make to their departments, institutions and academia in general.
