Climate change turns up risk of heat stroke for farmworkers

The death of a farmworker on May 14, 2005, east of Stockton, California, highlighted the sufferings of day laborers during the summer. Mara Isabel Vsquez Jimnez, originally from Oaxaca, Mexico, 17 years old and two months pregnant, worked in a vineyard in temperatures above 95 degrees.

Freezing Onions

I have a small growing area at the side of my house in Bishop that gets lots of heat and very little sun. I started planting onions in this area about 10 years ago but found that the bulbs never got more than 1-2 in diameter. Now I intentionally plant onions there every January that I freeze whole.
