The Livestock Advisory Committee (LAC) is responsible for the development and delivery of animal-related educational programs to 4-H members. The committee typically meets the first Wednesday of the month at the 4-H Office.
Purpose
- Provide leadership for livestock program.
- Organize and conduct skill training for volunteers.
- Organize and conduct county events (Field/Skills Days) that apply to livestock.
- Maintain communications with 4-HYD staff, clubs, groups, and 4-H Management Board
- Counsel volunteer leaders on the county’s 4-H policies and procedures as well as CDFA Rules for State Fairs, and the Agreement between UC, 4-H, FFA, Grange, Fairs, and CDFA.
- Conduct orientation for Project Leaders.
- Manage 4-H species awards for County Fair.
- Responsible for proficiency testing and awards.
- Coordinate fundraising opportunities to purchase 4-H awards at fair
Awards
Each year, the following awards are presented to 4-H members at the El Dorado County Fair 4-H Awards Ceremony.
- Outstanding Exhibitor (one per species)
- Super 4-H'er
- Cindy’s FLYERS (one per species)
- Teri Marie Lowrey (horse)
- Showmanship (all species)
- 4-H Grand Champion & 4-H Reserve Champion (market only)
Livestock Proficiencies
There are four proficiency levels for each species. Project proficiency is demonstrated by earning a test score of 70% or higher; tests may include true/false, fill in the blank, matching, multiple choice, and short answer questions. Proficiencies may be taken at Skills Day, by appoint at the 4-H Office, or at a time designated by the species' Resource Leader. Hat pins are awarded as follows:
- Level 1 - Project Pin
- Level 2 - Bronze Pin
- Level 3 - Silver Pin
- Level 4 - Gold Pin
