Kern County

UC Master Gardener Program of Kern County

About Us

The University of California Master Gardener Program, first established in the 1980s, is designed to educate and empower volunteers to extend research-based knowledge to California residents. This comprehensive training course provides a science-based foundation in home horticulture, pest management, and sustainable landscape practices. Through classroom instruction, hands-on experiences, and community engagement, participants will gain the knowledge and skills necessary to serve as effective community educators and environmental stewards.

Kern County is one of the top-producing agricultural counties in the United States. Often referred to as California’s fruit basket and breadbasket due to its massive agricultural output of crops that include fruits, vegetables, nuts and grains, this region’s diversity established itself as the ideal area for community gardening education and experimentation.

Kern County should not just be known for its fertile lands for crops. It should be known for its fertile ground for growing knowledge, leadership, and community-powered transformation that embodies the UC Master Gardener Program’s vision for a healthier, more sustainable and equitable California.

Now for the first time, the UC Master Gardener Program is excited to plant its roots here in Kern County! As our region faces growing challenges related to climate, water use, and food systems, the need for locally grounded, environmentally conscious, and sustainable gardening education has never been greater.

In Kern County, when seeds are sown here, abundance follows.

Join us on our adventure, as we grow the seeds of change into a story that can be sustained for generations to come!
