Become Part of the UC Master Gardener Program
The purpose of the UC Master Gardener Program is to cultivate and establish a network of trained volunteers who are passionate about educating Kern County residents grow healthier gardens, conserve natural resources and build resilient communities.

Application Requirements
- Be a current resident of Kern County
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Must attend an informational session
Fees
The Master Gardener Program is NOT FREE. To cover materials, training manuals, expert instruction and administrative costs, there will be a non-refundable tuition fee due upon acceptance into the program.
Currently our estimates for program tuition are $200.
Background Check
As required by the University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE), all volunteers must undergo a background check. The fee for the background check is not included in the tuition.

Life as a Master Gardener After Training
Once a Master Gardener Trainee completes the program and becomes Certified UC Master Gardener, they are required to perform 50 hours of volunteer work in their first year and 25 hours years following.
In addition to the 25 hours after their first year, UC Master Gardeners must complete 12 hours of continuing education annually.
The list below are some projects that UC Master Gardeners can take part in but are not limited to:
🌱 Answer gardening questions at Help Desks and community events
🌿 Mentor students and support school garden programs
🌻 Maintain therapeutic gardens at detention centers and other facilities
🌸 Care for and teach through local demonstration gardens
📚 Lead public gardening education at libraries, farmers markets, malls, and more
💻 Write blogs and create content for our website and social media platforms

What is the UC Master Gardener Program?
The UC Master Gardener Program trains local volunteers in research-based gardening and environmental practices, then supports them in sharing that knowledge with the community. From teaching workshops to answering gardening questions, Master Gardeners help Kern County residents grow healthier plants, save water, and create thriving, sustainable gardens.

I filled out the Interest Form, what are the next steps?
After completing the Interest Form, please register for one of the informational sessions, which is located at the top of this page. After attending the mandatory Informational Session, you will be receiving a link to the application form.
Why is the informational meeting mandatory?
This meeting is a chance for you to hear a presentation regarding the program, its impact on the community, and program expectations. Attending this meeting will help you decide if becoming a UC Master Gardener is for you, and the next steps after the application.
I completed the UC Master Gardener application, what now?
After completing the UC Master Gardener application, you will receive an invitation to an interview. This interview helps us get to know you better and answer questions that you may have about the program.
What happens after the interview?
The program coordinator will be sending out decision during late October to early November, along with finger printing forms and list of locations.
When is class tuition due?
One Time Payment is due December 1, 2025 .
Why is the tuition so expensive?
The tuition covers several parts of the program which include: 1 - 2 books, program materials, program activities/labs, name badges (for after graduation), program shirt (for after graduation).
Do you offer scholarships?
Since we are a new program, we do not have the funding or the cushion to support individuals for scholarships at this moment. All our funds are accounted for in this first cohort. If you are still really interested in this program, please contact the program coordinator.
When do classes start?
Classes will start the 3rd week of January up until the 1st week of May, in the evenings from 5:30PM - 8:30PM.
Classes are held WEEKLY on THURSDAYS. If you wish for a more definitive schedule with dates please contact the program coordinator.
