Did the Rural Health Infrastructure Break Down During the Pandemic? Evidence from the 2020 Meatpacking Plant COVID-19 Outbreaks (Virtual, Extension Foundation)

Dec. 5 | 10 - 11 a.m. PST

Learn details & register.

This webinar will present findings from a recent study examining the strain that COVID-19 outbreaks in meatpacking plants placed on rural healthcare systems. Using individual death certificate data from Minnesota and South Dakota, the study reveals that while direct COVID-19 deaths among meatpacking workers were relatively low, surrounding communities experienced substantial excess mortality, much of it unrelated to COVID-19. These results suggest that rural hospitals, with limited staffing and financial resources, were forced into triaging care during peak outbreaks. The discussion will highlight implications for strengthening rural health infrastructure and workforce resilience in future crises.

ESP Sponsored Webinar: Building Entrepreneur Friendly Communities in the Outdoor Recreation Sector (Virtual, Extension Foundation)

Dec. 8 | 10-11 a.m. PST

Learn details & register.

Join Epsilon Sigma Phi, The Extension Professional's Organization, to learn about building entrepreneur-friendly communities in the outdoor recreation sector. This program will share a community-based entrepreneurship curriculum tailored to the growing outdoor outdoor recreation economy, which represents 2.3% of the U.S. Gross Domestic Product (Bureau of Economic Analysis, 2024). Gateway communities near protected areas and public lands are crucial for supporting outdoor recreation and nature-based tourism, but often face limited technical assistance and resources. Funded by a grant, two universities collaborated to customize the curriculum to help gateway and rural communities leverage outdoor recreation economic opportunities. This session explores curriculum adaptations and strategies to strengthen economic resilience and promote growth in these communities.

Drafting a manuscript "counts,” but so does freewriting, generating field notes, editing and revising, outlining, mind-mapping, describing a new idea, preparing a bibliography, consolidating reviewers' comments into a list for revision, etc. Expanding your notion of what writing is will help you to reduce your resistance by making daily writing feel like a regular part of your everyday routine.
