Small Farms Research and Extension

University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE) Small Farms Advisors and program staff serve as an information hub connecting small-scale farms to research and education resources of the University of California. We are a program within the UC Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program (UC SAREP).

We serve a diverse clientele including:

  • Small-scale and diversified family farms
  • Beginning, immigrant, and refugee farmers
  • Growers of specialty crops not covered by traditional commodity-based extension programs

To keep in touch digitally, subscribe to the UC Small Farms blog for updates on new resources and upcoming events or follow the Small Farms Network on Instagram. Or, connect directly with our advisors and staff located in seven regional hubs throughout California.

Workshops and Events

Our regional small farms teams and affiliated partners offer trainings to help growers with production practices and regulatory requirements to support their small-scale farms. Visit our events calendar to view and register for upcoming workshops, webinars, and events.

SGMA and Groundwater

California is now regulating groundwater use through the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA). These new groundwater regulations may have an impact on your small-scale farming operation.  Explore our SGMA page to learn more about California groundwater regulations, as well as connect with our regional SGMA technical assistance staff.

On-Farm Food Safety

The chain of food safety begins with farmers in the field and continues through packinghouses, value-added production operations, farmers markets and other vendors, and ultimately ends with the consumer. View the Small Farms Food Safety page to learn more about on-farm food safety and to sign up for upcoming food safety trainings.
