#24 Hopscotch Game
Instructions
Congratulations, you found a UC 4-H Community Adventure Challenge! Let's have some fun!
Your challenge is to learn how to play a new game, called hopscotch, using only materials found around the park. Trying new things is what being an adventurer is all about!
These adventures are located all around Yolo County (a complete list of locations can be found on the navigation bar on the left).
Below are directions for how to complete this fun activity. You may choose to do all three levels of difficulty, each is a little different. Select which level you would like to try first.
There is also an activity you can do at home below.
1. Make a square using nature debris, such as bark, rocks, or sticks found on the ground (Do not take anything from a living plant or tree as this can kill it).
- Collect items.
- Take your items to an open space.
- Arrange your items to make a square. A square looks like this:
Example:
- Once it is laid out, trace it with your finger and/or walk around the outside of the shape.
2. Next, make a rectangle using nature debris.
- Collect more items if needed.
- A rectangle has two parallel sides longer than the other two parallel sides.
- Parallel means that two lines are always the same distance apart and never come together or touch, and looks like this:

- A rectangle looks like this:

3. Finally, make a triangle using nature debris.
- A triangle has three sides.

Example:
- Once it is laid out, trace it with your finger and/or walk around the outside of the shape.
4. Return the nature items to where you found them.
You will be building a hopscotch game using sticks.
1. Collect 25-31 sticks.
2. Bring your sticks to a large flat open area. The best area to set this up would be in the picnic area in the middle of the park next to the playground because there is a nice flat service.
3. Create a square big enough for your feet to fit inside (The sides don't have to connect but the shape should be formed nicely).
4. Now build additional squares to make the entire outline. Your final hopscotch outline should look something like the figure below:
5. Number squares verbally from 1-10, so you know in which direction to go.
6. Hop on one foot into each square sequentially.
7. Try not to land on a stick, fall, use two feet in one square, or land outside a line.
8. If you want to play against another person, proceed to the direction for “advanced” below.
ADVANCED (need at least 2 people to play)
1. Create a hopscotch game outline using the directions above for the intermediate activity.
2. Collect one rock per person.
3. The first player will throw their rock into the first square. (If it lands on a line, or outside the square, you lose your turn. Play proceeds to the next player to try.)
4. Hop on one foot into the first empty square (so you would jump over the first square where the rock landed, and into the second square). Then continue hopping on one foot into every other empty square in order.
5. At the side-by-side paired boxes (2-3, 5-6 and 8-9), jump with both feet, so that your left foot lands in #2, and your right foot lands in #3 if there are no rocks. If a rock is present, you must skip that box.
6. At #10, hop with both feet off the board, turn around, and head back toward the start.
7. Stop (on one foot) in box #2.
8. Bend down and pick up your rock.
9. Then hop with one foot into #1 and then off the board, while carrying your rock.
10. If you finish this sequence without any mistakes, you completed round 1. You will throw the rock into the next square (#2) on your next turn/round.
11. Mistakes include:
- landing in a square with a rock
- falling,
- Jumping or landing outside the lines,
- landing on a stick,
- missing a square
12. If you make a mistake, you lose your turn and must repeat the same number on your next turn.
13. Play then proceeds to the other player, who would throw their rock into #1 square and try to hop across the board without a mistake.
14. Play proceeds back and forth, progressing down the board.
15. Whoever reaches the tenth square with their rock first is the winner.
16. Once finished, put the items back where you found them.
Try these other classic activities that you can play at home! You can play by yourself or with others.
