#15 What Do Animals Eat?

Welcome to the UC 4-H Yolo Community Adventure!
Your challenge is to find some of the foods that animals eat in the park. Knowing what foods are safe to eat is an important survival skill for Adventurers.
These adventures are located all around Yolo County (a complete list of locations can be found on the navigation bar on the left).
Scroll down to find beginner, intermediate, and advanced level challenges. Have fun and don’t forget to share your experience using the comment box below!
There is also an activity you can do at home below.
- Look around the park for animals. Make sure you look in the sky, trees, and grass. Some animals are big like dogs and birds and other animals are small like ants and caterpillars. Can you see any?
- Take a walk around the park and library and search for 5 foods that animals can eat (such as nuts, berries, flowers or leaves). For your safety, do not eat unidentified foods and plants.
- Follow this link to tell us what foods you found!
1. Look around the park from where you are standing. Can you identify any food sources for animals?
2. Walk around the park and library and try to find 8 different berries, nuts, flowers or leaves that you think animals eat (be creative and remember that insects are animals too). For your safety, do not eat unidentified plants.
3. Share what food you found with the person who brought you to the park. If you have a phone, take a picture and upload it to the Esparto Centennial Park Padlet page.

- Take a photo with your smart device.
- Click on the link above to find the photo sharing page.
- In the bottom right corner of the page find the plus button.
- Click on the plus button to upload your photo.
- Upload your photo.
- Check back in a couple days to see your photo on the page. It will be approved by staff quickly.
- Do humans eat any of the same foods as the animals that are in the park?
- Walk around and try to find berries, nuts, flowers or leaves that you think animals eat. You can also look for other animals that might be prey. Try to guess if humans can also eat this food source. For your safety, do not eat unidentified plants.

Make a snack that uses nuts, fruits, or leaves (see an example of a healthy snack below). There is also a video demonstration of the recipe.
Answers for the Google Quiz that is in the beginner section:
- Birds, ants, and squirrels eat berries. Dogs do not eat berries as a part of their natural diet.
