#23 Making Tracks
Instructions
Congratulations, you found a UC 4-H Community Adventure Challenge! Let's have some fun!
Your challenge is to make your muscles stronger and engage your imagination. A strong body and mind are important to being an Adventurer!
These adventures are located all around Yolo County (a complete list of locations can be found on the navigation bar on the left).
Below are directions for how to complete this fun activity. You may choose to do all three levels of difficulty, each is a little different. Select which level you would like to try first.
There is also an activity you can do at home linked below.
A "silly walk" is a dramatic walk that is different from your normal way of moving. Examples would be waving your arms around, walking like a cowboy, or walking sideways.
You can either read the directions, below, or you can watch a short video.
Instructions for doing a "silly walk":
1. Stand on the track by the first tree closest to the bench by the parking lot.
2. From here to the Yellow pole of the play area you will do your first silly walk. If you need help coming up with a silly walk, there are examples below each step.
Dinosaur Silly Walk - Start in a standing position. Put your hands on your waist or hip. Now lift your right leg up as far as you can and take a giant step forward. Bring your other leg forward to meet your feet together again. Now bring your left leg up as far as you can and take a giant step forward, now bring your right leg to meet up with your left. Keep your arms as close to your body as possible, if you are having stability issues throw your arms out.
3. From the Yellow Pole to where the path bends next to the fence do your next silly walk.
Octopus Silly Walk - Start in a standing position and put your hands up and straight out to your sides. Start wiggling your arms and your body. Now start to walk forward while doing both of these things.
4. From the fence corner to the next bend in the track do the third silly walk.
Crab Silly Walk - start by squatting or getting as close to the ground as you can without sitting down. Lean your hands backward and place them on the ground. You should look like the little M now. Position your body so that your head and back are facing the way you want to go and “walk” forward by moving your hands and feet like a crab.
5. From this bend to the next bend in the track do your fourth silly walk.
Bear Silly Walk - Crouch down so that your hands touch the ground. Straighten your legs as much as you can. Now walk forwards by moving the right arm and leg forward together and once those have reached the ground then move the left arm and leg forward together. Repeat the process of moving your leg and arm together.
6. From this bend to where the last tree is on the straight track do your fifth silly walk.
Kangaroo Silly Walk & Jump - start in a standing position. Put both of your feet together and squat down enough that your knees are bent. Pull your arms to your body. Now jump forward using only your feet, no arms. Keep Jumping.
7. From this point to the first tree after the green bench do your sixth silly walk.
Gorilla Silly Walk - Start in a squatted position with your hands between your legs. Walk forward while staying in the squatted position. If you are able, use your hand to help walk forward for the full gorilla effect. If you want to add on more you can try to beat your chest with your fists as you walk.
8. Congratulations! You have done 6 silly walks around the track! Let us know in the comments below which one was your favorite.
Activity adapted from Lemon Lime Adventures and CBC Radio Canada
1. Stand on the track by the first tree closest to the bench by the parking lot.
2. Check to make sure that you have the following:
- Make sure you have a timer available on your phone, there should be one included on all iPhones and androids in the Clock App, or you can download one from your app store.
- Check to see if you have a step counter on your phone. One should be included on all iPhones and most android phones in the Health App. If not, you can download one from the app store.
3. Before you start your timer, answer the following questions in your note app on your phone:
- How long do you think it will take you to walk the track?
- If your phone counts steps, how many steps do you think it will take?
4. Start your timer app.
5. Walk the dirt path around the entire park until you get back to your starting point.
6. End your timer.
- What was your time? Was your estimated time close to it?
- How many steps did you take? Was your guess close to it?
7. Want to challenge yourself but don’t want to run, how about doing a timed silly walk around the track (see beginner level above)?
1. Stand on the track by the first tree closest to the bench by the parking lot.
2. Check to make sure that you have the following:
- Make sure you have a timer available on your phone, there should be one included on all iPhones and androids in the Clock App, or you can download one from your app store.
3. You will be given a series of photos to search for throughout the park. These photos are up-close shots of items. You will need to deduce from the photo what you think the item is.
4. Click on this link to go to the Scavenger Hunt.
5. Start your timer app on your phone.
6. Find all the items in the Scavenger Hunt.
7. End your timer. What was your time and did you find all the items in the Scavenger Hunt? Post your answer in the comment section below.
Try this activity at home. You can play by yourself or with others. Let us know if you created other moves to add to your game. https://www.fatherly.com/play/move-like-an-animal/
