Psychological issues associated with obesity

Being overweight can make life a lot tougher. Right or wrong, our culture tends to value thinness at this time.  The result is larger people can be made to feel inadequate because of their size.

Few things cause parents more pain than finding out their child feels rejected.  It's true that large children are sometimes treated differently and parents should acknowledge this reality.  However, they can also encourage their children's strengths.  Large people have the same potential for friendship, academic and professional success as others do.  Largeness need not be a barrier to a happy, healthy life. It is important to teach children to respect their body and the bodies of others even if they are different.

If you are sad about your weight or your child's weight, discuss your worries and experiences.  Remember there is no perfect body and that many factors affect your weight, including genetics, environment and food choices.  Be reassured that people come in different shapes and sizes and that, no matter what your body size, you can have a fulfilling life.

No one should ever be allowed to tease or harass someone about their weight. Children must learn that teasing and name calling are not acceptable.  If you are the subject of disrespectful treatment, politely stand up for yourself or just walk away.
