I seldom buy calendars because I receive so many free ones sent to me by various organizations. The one exception is the past few years I've been purchasing the annual Gardening Guide and Calendar issued by the UC Master Gardeners of Sacramento County.

A Pleasant Surprise!

When I moved into my new house, one year ago this February, I had no idea that we had a crape myrtle on the property! When I first moved to Suisun, I discovered that the larger streets are lined with this flowering tree.

Winter Solstice

Every year around this time I find myself exclaiming "It's getting dark out and it's not even 5 o'clock! I get up when it's dark, get home from work when it's dark, and it's too late to get into the garden! The shortening seems to happen so quickly.

The beginning of November I noticed something strange in my raised garden bed. At first, I thought perhaps it was an odd leaf blown in or a dried pod carried in by a bird or squirrel. But I had never seen anything quite like it. I cautiously touched it. The outer petal like structures felt rubbery.

Pomegranates, Friends and More

Every year, I look forward to having red ball ornaments in our front yard in the form of pomegranates. This year was no disappointment. Our 10-year-old pomegranate (Punica granatum L.'Wonderful') has been giving us loads of fruit year after year.
