Recientemente, un grupo de asesores del Departamento de Agricultura y Recursos Humanos de la Universidad de California realizó una visita a San Pasqual Valley Soil, ubicado en Escondido, California. El objetivo principal de esta visita fue conocer de primera mano las prácticas y técnicas relacionadas con el manejo de suelos y el compostaje, un proceso fundamental para la sostenibilidad agrícola y la protección del medio ambiente.
El compostaje es un proceso controlado de descomposición de materiales orgánicos, como estiércol, residuos de cultivos, cama animal y otros desechos, llevado a cabo por microorganismos en presencia de oxígeno. Este proceso no solo contribuye a la reducción de desechos orgánicos, sino que también produce compost, un aditivo orgánico valioso que mejora la salud del suelo y la productividad agrícola.
Roxana Price, asesora en Educación Comunitaria de EFNEP y coordinadora bilingüe del programa Trees for Tomorrow de UC ANR, subrayó la importancia de la participación comunitaria: “Todos debemos poner de nuestra parte. A veces, eso significa simplemente separar los desechos de comida y la basura adecuadamente antes de que llegue el camión recolector”. Price también señaló que UC ANR cuenta con los recursos y la capacidad para orientar a la comunidad sobre cómo hacer su propio compost. “Podemos guiar a las personas sobre dónde y cómo deben desechar su basura, la importancia de separarla correctamente y cómo estas acciones contribuyen de manera significativa al cuidado del medio ambiente”.
Durante la visita, se abordó también la Ley SB 1383, una legislación clave en la lucha contra el cambio climático en California. Esta ley tiene como objetivo reducir las emisiones de metano, un gas de efecto invernadero extremadamente potente, al disminuir los contaminantes climáticos de corta duración. La SB 1383 establece que los condados y ciudades de California deben cumplir con un mandato que exige la compra, uso o donación de una cantidad específica de productos orgánicos residuales recuperados, alcanzando al menos 0,08 toneladas (160 libras) por residente al año.

- Permanece en interiores: Mantén las ventanas y puertas cerradas para evitar que el humo entre en tu hogar.
- Usa purificadores de aire: Los purificadores de aire con filtros HEPA pueden ayudar a reducir la cantidad de partículas finas en el aire interior.
- Usa mascarillas adecuadas: Si necesitas salir, usa una mascarilla N95 que se ajuste bien para filtrar las partículas finas.

Llega la temporada de incendios y, aunque la mayoría de las personas saben que deben tomar ciertas medidas, pocas veces lo hacen. En la División de Agricultura y Recursos Naturales de la Universidad de California, este tema se toma muy en serio.
“Como bien sabemos, en nuestro estado los incendios son una amenaza constante y parte de los ecosistemas”, dijo Luca Carmignani, Ph.D., asesor contra incendios de UC ANR. “Hemos preparado una serie de videos con las formas más sencillas para proteger tu hogar”.
Luca explicó que, en un incendio, las brasas pueden ingresar a las viviendas a través de los respiraderos, siendo esta la razón por la que muchas casas se incendian. Para evitar esto, es necesario mantener la malla del respiradero en buen estado.
Otro aspecto importante para considerar es que los techos generalmente reciben la mayor cantidad de brasas durante los incendios. Por eso, es crucial mantenerlos limpios y libres de hojas o cualquier objeto que pueda obstruirlos.
Es fundamental que todos estemos preparados y tomemos las precauciones necesarias para proteger nuestros hogares y comunidades. Aquí te dejamos algunos consejos esenciales:
- Limpia el perímetro de tu hogar: Retira hojas secas, ramas y cualquier material inflamable que pueda servir de combustible.
- Crea una zona de seguridad: Mantén una distancia mínima de 30 pies de material inflamable alrededor de tu casa. Debe mantener las plantas lejos de cualquier combustible.
- Revise techos y canaletas: Asegúrate de que no haya acumulaciones de hojas en las canaletas y de que las ventanas estén bien selladas.
- Ventanas y Garaje: Se recomienda tener ventas de doble cristal porque las llamas pueden romper el vidrio y entrar en la casa; No olvide que los garajes regularmente tienen ventanas.

En la Escuela Popular en San José, una academia bilingüe (inglés/español) para estudiantes desde kinder hasta el octavo grado, algo emocionante está ocurriendo.
La mañana del 18 de junio, un grupo de estudiantes llegó y se puso en manos de los instructores del programa 4H de la División de Agricultura y Recursos Naturales de la Universida de California (UC ANR). Este día hay dos retos por cumplir: el primero es integrar a los estudiantes en un plan de estudios, y el segundo, servir de ejemplo sobre cómo enseñar a otros instructores a dar los cursos que 4H imparte.
“El propósito de este campamento es compartir todas las actividades con un grupo de jóvenes y, al mismo tiempo, que estas actividades y maneras en que han sido enseñadas hoy en día sirvan como un ejemplo para educadores o profesionales que trabajen en programas después de la escuela, para que ellos o ellas puedan impartir estas lecciones”, explicó Fe Moncloa, asesora emérita de extensión universitaria de UC ANR.
Las actividades que se impartieron provienen del currículom iCode, el cual utiliza tres conceptos: el desarrollo juvenil, la computación y la justicia social. Todas las actividades realizadas en el aula giran en torno a estos temas.
Uno de los estudiantes, John, de 13 años, comentó: “Yo me enteré sobre el campamento por la maestra, ella nos invitó y yo me interesé en los temas que iban a presentar. Me dio curiosidad por saber más; los temas son buenos, es algo que sí me llama la atención”.
Zubia Mahmood es una de las instructoras de 4H. Para Zubia, la clave de una buena instrucción es la adaptación. “Trato de adaptar el currículo para no ofender a nadie y hacerlo fácil y entendible para todos”, explicó Mahmood, quien además utiliza actividades que permiten romper el hielo entre estudiantes, así como entre estudiantes y maestros.
El campamento en la Escuela Popular es un reflejo de cómo la educación puede ser inclusiva y relevante, ofreciendo a los estudiantes no solo conocimientos académicos, sino también habilidades prácticas y una comprensión profunda de temas sociales. Al final del día, tanto los estudiantes como los instructores salieron enriquecidos, llevando consigo nuevas lecciones y experiencias que trascenderán más allá del aula.

La recolección de fresas, arándanos o cerezas, los paseos por rancherías para visitar cultivos de flores, la estancia en pequeños hoteles rurales e incluso las catas de vino son algunas de las actividades del agroturismo que muchos pequeños agricultores están incorporando a sus negocios.
El agroturismo, una tendencia en crecimiento en California, ofrece a los visitantes la oportunidad de experimentar la vida rural y agrícola de primera mano. Esta forma de turismo no solo brinda a los turistas una conexión más cercana con la naturaleza y la producción de alimentos, sino que también representa una fuente importante de ingresos adicionales para los agricultores locales.
Según el condado de San Diego, se estima que en esta región hay al menos 6,000 pequeñas granjas que podrían añadir el agroturismo a sus actividades diarias. Esta cifra refleja el enorme potencial que tiene el agroturismo para transformar la economía rural de la zona, proporcionando oportunidades de empleo y desarrollo sostenible.
Gracias a un financiamiento económico recibido a principios del 2024, los asesores de pequeñas granjas de la Extensión Cooperativa de la Universidad de California (UCCE) en San Diego se han dedicado a promover el amplio y variado abanico de actividades que los pequeños agricultores pueden integrar a sus negocios para aumentar su productividad.
“Nuestro propósito es unir a miembros de la comunidad que ya estén en el negocio del agroturismo o quieran comenzar a emprender su negocio, para ver que necesidades hay, y a que dificultades se enfrentan”, dijo Darlene Ruiz, asesora de la Extensión Cooperativa de la Universidad de California (UCCE) en San Diego.
En una junta de agroturismo realizada en los campos de flores de Carlsbad en San Diego, Ruiz explico que actualmente UCCE San Diego tiene un proyecto para crear una asociación entre las personas que ya están en el agroturismo y poder crear una conferencia sobre el tema el próximo año.
California, con su diversidad climática y geográfica, es un lugar ideal para el turismo agrícola. La implementación de esta actividad no solo beneficia a los agricultores al diversificar sus fuentes de ingresos, sino que también educa al público sobre la importancia de la agricultura local y sostenible.
Es gracias a un apoyo financiero que recibió UCCE San Diego para lanzar un proyecto en apoyo a la industria agroturística en San Diego que se estarán llevando a cabo juntas y paseo de campo para los productores locales.
“Tenemos una industria agrícola muy grande en San Diego, una industria turística que es bastante fuerte entonces la fusión de estas dos genera muchas oportunidades para que los productores puedan beneficiarse de actividades agroturísticas”, dijo Ramiro Lobo, asesor de la Extensión Cooperativa de la Universidad de California (UCCE) en San Diego.
