#16 Shadow Play
Instructions in English
Congratulations, you found a UC 4-H Community Adventure Challenge! Let's have some fun!
Your challenge is to use your body to interact with the sunlight. Knowing how to be stealth and have good body awareness is crucial for adventurers.
These adventures are located all around Yolo County (a complete list of locations can be found on the navigation bar on the left).
Below are directions for how to complete this fun activity. You may choose to do all three levels of difficulty, each is a little different. Select which level you would like to try first.
There is also an activity you can do at home below.
1. Find a shadow cast by a tree.
2. What do you notice about the position of the shadow in relation to the sun?
3. How do the sun and tree interact to make the shadow?
4. Now, use your own body to make a shadow. Can you do the following with your shadow:
- Make it smaller?
- Make it bigger?
- Hide it inside the tree’s shadow?
- Place it alongside the tree’s shadow?
5. Next find some objects nearby, like leaves, a sweatshirt, a rock, or a piece of paper.
6. Hold these up to the light and notice the difference in the shadows that each item makes.
7. How does changing their position change their shadow?
8. Does the light shine through some differently than others?
9. Can you do the above prompts that you did with your body with your objects?
1. Find a shadow cast by a tree.
2. What do you notice about the position of the shadow in relation to the sun?
3. How do the sun and tree interact to make the shadow?
4. Now, use your own body to make a shadow. Can you do the following with your shadow:
- Stand next to the tree’s shadow and reach out your shadow to touch it?
- Dash through the tree’s shadow?
- Stand at the edge of the tree’s shadow and raise the shadow of your arms out of it?
- Run around the edge of the tree’s shadow?
- Stand inside the tree’s shadow, then lean out one side?
- Do somersaults through the shadow?
1. Use your own body to make a shadow. Can you do the following with your shadow:
- Use your body to cast the shadow for each letter of the alphabet (if you are with someone, you can team up and try to work together to make these)?
- Make yourself into several shapes, like a triangle, circle, and square (if you are with someone, you can team up and try to work together to make these)?
- Do cartwheels through the shadow from one side to the other?
- Do a handstand in the shadow up next to the tree trunk?
Want to use the sunlight and shadows for an art project when you get home, try this shadow art activity.
