2 RFPs - Vertebrate Pest Control Research and Forest Monitoring

Dear Colleagues,

1) California Department of Food and Agriculture’s (CDFA) Integrated Pest Control Branch is now accepting applications for the Vertebrate Pest Control Research Program (VPCRP). This funding opportunity is designed to support innovative research and education projects aimed at enhancing control measures for vertebrate pests that threaten California’s agricultural economy, infrastructure, environment, and public health.

Proposals may target research and/or education initiatives to improve vertebrate pest control measures. Projects should aim to address significant challenges posed by pests and offer measurable long-term solutions.

Key Details

  • Proposal Deadline: Saturday, September 20, 2025 (1 Month Before VPCRP Meeting)
  • Typical Grant Duration: Two Years
  • Typical Award Maximum: $55,000
  • Estimated Total Funding Available: $200,000

2) The Board of Forestry and Fire Protection’s Effectiveness Monitoring Committee (EMC), invites applications for the Effectiveness Monitoring Program Grant for Fiscal Years 2025–2026. This initiative funds rigorous scientific research that tests the efficacy of the California Forest Practice Rules and related natural resource protection regulations. The EMC seeks to create a robust feedback loop by translating research findings into white papers, scientific reports, and policy recommendations that inform statewide timberland and rangeland management practices.

The EMC is seeking project proposals that:

  1. Address one or more of the EMC’s Research Themes and Critical Monitoring Questions
  2. Address natural resource protection issues that are important for California forestlands

Prioritized projects should align with one or more of the prioritized Research Themes and Critical Monitoring Questions (CMQs) below.

  • Managing Watercourse and Lake Protection Zones (WLPZs) to reduce or minimize potential fire behavior and rate of spread. (Question 1h)
  • Assessing if Forest Practice Rules (FPRs) associated regulations effective in minimizing management-related sediment delivery from forest management activities to watercourse channels at the watershed and sub-watershed level in managed watersheds. (Question 2a)
  • Reducing or minimizing management-related generation of sediment and delivery to watercourse channels. (Question 3a)
  • Maintaining and restoring the distribution and quality of foraging, rearing and spawning habitat for anadromous salmonids. (Question 5a)
  • Examining strategies for fuel load management and wildfire hazard reduction. (Question 6c)
  • Enhancing overall forest wildfire resilience and climate adaptation strategies. (Question 12a)

EMC encourages proposals that address Research Themes and CMQs that have not been addressed by previously funded projects. Past and present EMC supported projects can be viewed in the EMC website
