In November 2018, the worst fire in California history, the Camp Fire, devastated the towns of Paradise, Magalia, Pulga, and Concow. Over 13,000 homes were destroyed and 85 people died.

The UC Master Gardeners of San Luis Obispo County covered a lot of territory in 2019. Our 90 volunteers recorded over 5,000 volunteer hours and 1100 continuing education hours. Here's a snapshot of the 2019 activities and what we have planned for 2020.

On Giving Tuesday 2019, donors gave $130,311 over 24 hours for UC Cooperative Extension, statewide programs and research and extension centers that make up the University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources network.

During the month of December, cabbage has had a chance not only to grow to its full size and density, but also to experience some cool weather, which helps it become sweeter and mellower in flavor.

Back in July of 2016, a team of researchers affiliated with the University of California, Davis, wrote in the journal Phytopathology that the three-cornered alfalfa leaf hopper, Spissistilus festinus, transmits the virus that causes grapevine red blotch virus.

Late winter and early spring rains made 2019 a great year for the persimmon harvest here at South Coast REC providing a bountiful harvest of fruit. A group of twenty-seven attended the Persimmon Hoshigaki Workshop & U-Pick held on November 23, 2019 at the South Coast Research and Extension Center.

UC Davis scientists, in collaboration with UC Berkeley and Oregon State University researchers, are leading a $3 million federal grant targeting the grapevine red blotch virus and its vectors. The disease threatens the $162 billion grape industry and is described as an "urgent problem.
