Ongoing research

Graduate students and postdoctoral scholars trained by world-renowned entomologist and toxicologist John Casida of the University of California, Berkeley, are memorializing him for his powerful impact on science and his non-wavering impact on their careers and lives.

We found them. Referring back to the previous post, as our readers know we've been looking for spotted wing drosophila pupae under fruit in raspberries, and now on the second read have confirmed that they are indeed pupating within a centimeter of the fallen fruit.

This summer remember that fruits are easy to freeze. Many you don't need to blanch or do much to other than wash, dry and perhaps add sugar to (for the best product). Local small berries, if you grow them, are probably past picking, but they are still available in markets.

On July 9 we surveyed parasitism of Western grape leafhopper (WGLH) and Virginia creeper leafhopper (VCLH) across 9 sites in Mendocino and Lake counties (Fig. 1). WGLH parasitism was fairly consistent (average 38%), but there was little to no VCLH parasitism (average 0.6%).
