Pruning Ribes

Scientific Name
Ribes spp.

Although most ribes are deciduous, viburnifolium are evergreen.
The stems of ribes are not long lived. Therefore, taking out only new stems could shorten the life of the plant. Keep the new stems that are growing in a desired direction and remove the others at the base.

Do not prune severely. Removing too many stems at one time can kill the plant.

When to Prune
June, July – after the winter bloom and spring growth

How & What to Prune
Remove dead, diseased, or damaged wood.
Use thinning and releadering cuts to remove or shorten crossing branches.
Then, use thinning and releadering cuts to open the plant or to reduce its height and width, as necessary.
